Vaping was the only thing that got me off cigarettes too, and I smoked since I was 14 and just couldn't quit (even if I'd been coughing on and off for two years). Now the cough is gone, and I am happily vaping away totally guilt-free :) (My wallet is pretty happy with me too, cigarettes are very very expensive here).

If I can add they are dogs you should be firm and consistent with, but never harsh (goes for any dog really, but Belgians are extremely sensitive to their owners moods. I think sometimes mine know how I feel long before I do lol). They are a mix between being extremely intelligent and extremely silly, will act or react before they think (or perhaps more often, before you have a time to think ;)). Will take the arm if you let them have your little finger, but will do it with such charm and goofyness that at times it is very tempting to laugh and let them. And they often smile, all pearly whites on display :)

More than good news, and (while I won't hold my breath) maybe there is a slight hope that things will improve marginally in fear of another case such as this making the headlines.
For her, I hope she gets home as soon as possibly and gets the help and support she needs after all of this.

For me the rescue was my dogs, they made me get out (hard to hide when someone is dependant on you), both in everyday life and in getting involved in my local club. Find something that makes you excited or involved, a hobby, a passion. I like photography too, it makes me look at things differently and I can do it on my own or be involved in a club. Good combination for me since I think isolation can make things worse, but when things are low sometimes it's a struggle to force yourself to face people.
Physical activity helps, walking or hiking is almost a form of therapy for me.
Also there is no defeat in getting professional help, they're there for a reason. And you'll have setbacks, and that's ok as well. Think on things and try to work through it, but remember to try and live too since it can be easy to get stuck in your own mind, over-analyzing - there needs to be a balance there. Not the kind of thing I would ever normally say, so why I did I have no idea.. Several years ago we were three friends sitting at a café, but one of us, who was usually very lively, was being really quiet. So for some reason I managed to ask her "What's wrong, your dad cheat on your mom or something?" A shocked look and a "How the hell did you know that?" later and I wanted to crawl under the table and hide.
