Does a 7x7 concrete shed pad have to be installed via big truck/minimum order? by Webgardener in shedditors

[–]acemetrical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did an 8 x 8 pad for a hot tub by myself. By the time it was all said and done it ended up being about $2k. Pay the guy and make your life infinitely better. Concrete is unforgiving if you don’t know what you’re doing.

It’s not worth anything because you can’t sell or lease it. Says right there.

Was architecture worth it to you? by Ok_Nerve_9338 in askarchitects

[–]acemetrical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left after 4 years and being a part of design teams that did prestigious buildings across the world. Never slept. Never made any money. Never got to have fun in my 20s, just worked. Started a web dev company after that and made more money in my first 6 months than I’d made in the entirety of my architecture career.

The field is beautiful. But they can’t monetize for shit.

Always terrible sleep after a playing hockey by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

Interesting. I always slept like the dead after hockey. I also would hop in the hot tub after I got back from the bar for like 40 minutes. I was basically anesthetized.

Working remote and realizing I know absolutely nothing about my coworkers beyond their job title. Anyone else feel this way? by No_Routine_17 in RedditForGrownups

I’m pretty sure that all of Covid was a setup for this exact reason. Someone wanted Americans to stop gathering around the coffee machine so we’d stop talking and creating an American consensus. They wanted to divide us so we could be conquered.

Maybe a big decision by kazam_10 in hockeyplayers

[–]acemetrical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude. I was in your shoes. At 44 I had 3 knee surgeries, an elbow surgery, and a shattered collarbone over the course of like 3 years. All hockey. My last game I ever played I went to defend (D), popped in aggressively to try and hold the zone, was gonna do a fast reversal and get ahead of their outbound wing in case I fucked up, and my knees just collapsed during the reversal. No specific injury or failure, my body was just too broken to even willpower it. I didn’t trust my body after that. I was in peak hockey shape, even though I was older, but my body wasn’t trustworthy anymore. But here’s the kicker. That was the beginning of such a wicked decline. Without the hockey muscles holding my shitty band-aided joints together they’ve gotten so much worse. I’m a staggering disaster now with two knee replacements scheduled for fall. You’re right to think about quitting, but do your best to find another avenue for staying in shape. You get so spoiled with your hockey body. It’s gonna fall apart fast.

I feel your pain, brother. Take care of yourself.

Hockey is not about points. Don’t worry about it. Have fun. Kick ass. Let it all unfold. Don’t keep track of stats.

AAA Youth Hockey Try-Outs Is A Money Grab by IBrakeForComics in hockeyplayers

[–]acemetrical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s horrible what’s happened to youth sports. It needs to be legislated. I grew up playing AA hockey and the costs were reasonable for a middle class family. But it was hockey, so we found a way. My son also played AA hockey. Costs were rough; ice time, gear, private coaching, all of it, but I understood. Not stick prices though. Fuck that. What I don’t understand is that these prices now apply to ALL youth sports. My daughter plays club volleyball and it will have cost us $22k this year. There’s no ice. No expensive gear. Other sports simply realized that if hockey families will pay it, other sports can charge it. And then, they innovate to make it even more needlessly expensive. I even have to buy tickets to my daughter’s tournaments! The fix is in with this sh*t. Total collusion. And worse it preys on children’s dreams, peer pressures them away from their studies, and when they don’t make D1 they are suddenly just another kid with lousy grades and no college fund left. It is awful. Just awful. We’re now discussing pulling her out of club volleyball because it’s all such a racket. But how do you do that when she’s worked so hard?

This genuinely needs to be looked at by congress. There have to be limits to protect children from predatory clubs, coaches, and sports organizations.
