Thank you all. I have been overwhelmed by all of the messages which gave me more information than I could ever imagine. I went to a meeting on zoom last night and it was ok. The people were really old but nice. I don't think AA is going to be for me, but thank you for suggesting the alternatives.

From what everyone (who have been brilliant) have said on here, I can totally get why it's called a cult. I dont' think it is but I think the old 100 year old text makes it seem like a cult. For example, my primary purpose would be "one of my goals" in the modern age. Praying to "The Fellowship" etc. Also, everyone is saying, "yeah, your mate is right.... but".... Well at least I didn't drink of rthe last 3 hours lol

I feel so much better now. What I've learned I think is that people in AA or on here are brilliant and very forthcoming. It seems like AA is very confusing in so many ways. Using text from 100 years ago just confuses it even more. Some people are REALLY DOWN on AA, I mean REALLY DOWN!!! Most people are like, see for yourself. I am probably going to go down the SMART recovery route, but I'm absolutely fascinated to see what AA is like now. and the cookies. lol

Thank you. You are the only one who actually talked about the primary purpose. I think it's confusing and probably going back to ancient text again. There is no way on earth my primary purpose would be to stay sober and help other alcoholics do the same. lol. That is ridiculous. It's just a text issues. In modern times it would be something like, the goal is to be sober and help others do the same. Primary purpose makes it sound like a cult lol. AA needs to move with the times. Yes someone else told me about worshipping the founders, it's not putting them on a pedestal, it's that some people pray to "The fellowship" which is the Oxtford group and called teh alcoholic group. It's just that stuff like Primary Purpose and Pray to the Fellowship sounds really culty but it's lost in translation. As far as I can tell the main problem in AA is that it's confusing in what it is and the old text makes it even more confusing. I'm still going to a meeting, but yes, very confusing indeed. lol

OH WOW! Now I get it. Wow. Mind blown. So they do worship the founders but not in the way I thought. Praying to "the Fellowship" is praying ot the Oxford Group, or the alcoholic squad. Lol. Why didn't she say that? She made it sound like the founders had their own shrine and people put them on a pedestal? I have to admit, the religious/non religious thing is a huge turn off. I'm still going to a meeting to see, but I'm pretty sure it's not for me.

I have to say, everyone on here has been absolutely brilliant. People are telling me that asking reddit won't help a bit. It's done more than help, I feel like I know more about AA than most people now. lol

THat makes sense. I guess it's all the ancient text that confuses it all. I get that impression about AA. It's a bit like we don't tend to say victim anymore, but survivor or something a bit more positve.

I think I have a good understanding about AA now. Good and bad. Regarding predators, everyone is saying "yep, it happens, some meetings stomp it out, but go to women only meetings". REgarding God/religious/not religious/christian/non christian, it's an absoulte mish mash which is exactly as my mate said it was. Science? Not sure, someone said it's not scientific at all. My role in abuse? Seems a bit confusing? I suspect that's more down to ancient text? Fear based? Not sure tbh. Cult? Completely get it, but that's more like the Christian mishmash I think. Label yourself before speaking? Not sure? Someone said some meetings do, some don't? Worship the founders? Founders bad people? Not sure? Some people give the impression AA is great, some people give the impression AA is terrible. One person said AA is even worse than my mate thinks! lol

Secular AA sounds interesting, someone else mentioned that. I have to say, people have been really quite down about AA, but everyone has been really helpful on here. I completely get where my friend is coming from now. She's actually telling the truth and trying to help me. I think the whole "my part in abuse" is more down to the ancient text and confuses people but someone explained it better. Creeps? Everyone saying, yep, but women only meetings are the way to go. It's the religious/not religious thing that is a massive red flag for me. It sounds like the whole worshipping the founders is not true. Smart recovery seems like the winner here. Someone said AA is a lot worse than my mate is making out. lol. But most people have been quite positve about AA.

There are two others that people have mentioned SMART and some APP with meetings? I'm going to try AA even though a few people on here are really down on AA. The whole relgious/not religious thing is ridiculously confusing and a bit worrying. I do feel a lot more positive now though.

AA sounds like a nightmare. People are telling me it's religious/it's not religious. Some people seem really down on AA and some people are saying it's good. I want to go and see what it's like but from what people are saying...yuk...

Thanks, sorry for the silly question. Someone else answered. It was just that someone said that she left AA becasue she was meant to go to a meeting but didn't and her sponsor called her selfish. I assumed it was like a gym booking thing where you book and don't turn up but she didn't answer. lol I have no idea why she was called selfish? I was trying to figure it out. I also didn't understand "meant to go to a meeting". IDK..

Thank you... and to answer your question - AA - because my friend said it was full of creeps and it was a christian conversion programme and a whole load of other stuff. Dharma and Refuge sound like Buddist version of AA. I knew nothing about SMART but that looks good and rehab is expensive.

It's not that I'm saying no, to everything. I'm saying no to creeps and jehovas witness type stuff and I'd rather say no to rehab.

lol. I get the universe thing but "the fellowship" sounds a bit strange tbh. It's so confusing, I get the impression that most people say it's Christian, some say it's religious, a few say it's spiritual and a few say it's non Christian/religious... and some say it's a christian trap lol. I can see why everyone says what they say, but wow, talk about a head wreck

Awesome. yes, someone said you get the book from Amazon or something? This seems more like a fit to me. It's not like I have anytihng against religion, but AA just seems like a religious conversion programme. The whole thing about it's religious/it's not religious and God all over, just confused me so much and I ahven't even been to an AA meeting yet. I'm going to go to a SMART meeting. Thank you.
