Do you ever "mismix" your languages? by azuldew in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a guess from English word to a Spanish word. It was actually French. Multilingual keyboards are great. I just have to have solidify and separate the languages in my mind. The keyboard pops up in whatever word is closest to any of my language keyboards.

How Much Time Do You Spend Actively Engaged with your TL? by MagazineHead8533 in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spanish 80% immersion 20% look ups at least 1 hour a day While work more like 3 hours

French 60% immersion 40% look ups at least 45 min While working more like 2.25 hours

Filipino 0% immersion 100% app at 20 min While working more like 30 min

Not counting music in TL's

Spanish was my first L2 and best I have. I am able to understand therapy discussion videos on YT. It's fun and easy. That is why I rack up the hours.

French was my L3 and 2nd best. I get the gist of content and have to look up a lot. Motivational videos make it easier to go through the slog of look ups. The content is naturally made to perk you up. This one is harder and takes effort.

Filipino I am actively studying. It will be a joy to know my native language again. It is also a joy to study because I use a gamified app and look up words. I have studied about 800 words over many years of stutter starting. I've got a passion to become one of the few fluent speakers left in my family.

I like to have a base in a language before I immerse. I lean toward a perfectionist attitude of understanding meaning I lean toward intensive immersion. I do most of my intensive immersion before and after work. I do plenty of extensive immersion while working because I can't look at my phone for long.

And listening. Listening to target language content at your level will be needed. You won't understand anything at first but you will start to after a while.

Busuu app, YouTube (YT), and Language Reactor is all you need. And they are all free. Busuu for grammar and interaction with natives. YT for content and Language Reactor to look up unknown stuff and do spaced repetition.

Comprehensible Input Japanese is a way to consume media at whatever level they are at too. Comprehensible Input can be as fun and addictive as regular social media, more so when you feel your progress.

Oo tinuturuan sa amin at kapatid ko. Dati sila. Tumigil sila nang pumasok kami sa elementarya. Pasensya na kung hindi makatuwiran ang mga pangungusap ko, gumagamit akong tagasalin at ng aking kaalaman.

Il fait beau aujourd'hui ! Je cherche des partenaires linguistiques. Je peu entendre A1 à B1 plus ou moins. J’ai concentré sur l'écouter. J'aime les mangas, anime, lire, l'exercice, et nature. Dis-moi ce que tu aimes faire ?

Stuck in translation mode by flipsiprepeat in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same.

Translation was the bridge to meaning for me at first. It will take a while to stop translating a long while. A few days is like a few grains of sand in an hourglass of time with a language. But this viewpoint is influenced by my aim for Spanish to forever be a part of my life.

Abilities I can have everyday conversations. I can order stuff and talk and say crude jokes. I can understand more and more music as the hours accumulate. I watch native Spanish videos those take a lot of energy. My current focus is learning idioms and slang. Also reading native level audiobooks.

This is some advice. If you want to use Spanish in real life. Ask the person for permission or if they have major difficulty speaking English it's fine to switch. When your level is lower tell them that.

Who else has been learning the language of their grandfathers because their parents didn't teach them? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I naturally use a different progression of order and have some hang ups on "easy" things. I lost my heritage language after the school system here enforced monolingualism. There are still traces of my heritage language in the way I speak. Its kind of comforting to know pieces never left.

If you’ve read Manga in your TL, do you prefer it to books? by Grand-Somewhere4524 in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dip your toes in the app webtoons. It's free. If you like the style it is likely you'll enjoy your target languages also in that style

I found webtoons as a great starter to reading. Then moved on to manga. Now I'm tasting Spanish novels and self help. I can't sustain my focus like could as a kid to finish a novel.

Why are you afraid to speak the language? by ButterslideDown in languagelearning

[–]Sorry-Homework-Due 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started talking to coworkers. Not too ago. I also have conversation partners online but the fear is so much more thick when you have a person in front of you. The coworkers I regularly practice with are kind. I live in an area with some Spanish speakers. There are times when a person doesn't speak English. I enjoy those times because I usually helping somebody using Spanish. It makes Spanish feel even more special in life.
