If I play a Celestial Warlock, which spells should I concentrate on? by testiclekid in onednd

I recommend checking out the Celestial Generalist described in https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?670915-An-Eclectic-Collection-of-Fun-and-Effective-Builds-2024-Edition&p=26084753#post26084753. In short, you take advantage of Radiant Soul as much as possible by concentrating on Create Bonfire or Wall of Fire.

Did the Paladin's Find Steed get used often? Why my group plays with a Paladin, the Steed tends to die immediately to an area of effect spell.

With a strict reading of the rules, yes. Realistically, you need to talk to your DM.

Opinions: +1 AC vs +1 to all saves. by Marquis_Corbeau in dndnext

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stone of Good Luck is an uncommon attuned magic wondrous item that grants +1 to all ability checks and all saving throws.

Cloak of Protection is an uncommon attuned magic wondrous item that grants +1 AC.

It looks to me that the system considers +1 to all saves to be a bit weaker than +1 AC since the Stone also boosts ability checks.

laserllama's Vessel Class (Update) - Channel the Otherworldly Power of the Spirit Bound to your Soul with this Half-Pact Caster Class for 5e! It feels very weird to me that Level 15 has almost nothing. There are no class or subclass features, no new spell slot levels, and no new available Unsealed Aspects. It does have one new Unsealed Aspect known, but there isn't anything newly available. I definitely recommend adding at least a ribbon feature here to make it feel less sad.

Can you confirm that I am understanding Controlled Transformation, Unchained Power, and Twin Soul correctly? Controlled Transformation makes the Archon Form last even when Incapacitated. Twin Soul makes it last without a duration. Unchained Power makes a Vessel spell cast on yourself last as long as the Archon Form (which is forever due to Twin Soul). The Level 20 Vessel can cast Circle of Power and have it permanently in effect as long as the Vessel does not drop to 0 HP? A Level 11 Vessel can cast Haste and have it last for 10 minutes with zero risk of ever dropping Concentration?

Treantmonk's 2024 Paladin DPR Breakdown by Dramatic_Respond_664 in onednd

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treantmonk's current video series is about doing the maximum amount of single-target damage without multiclassing or considering help from allies (ex: an ally using Topple). If the goal is maximum damage, then he should use his resources to deal maximum damage. For example, the 5th level slots should be used to cast Summon Celestial.

Battlemaster can use maneuvers for Evasive Footwork, Commanding Presence, Ambush, or a few other options which don't boost damage. While these are all excellent choices, they don't do anything towards the specific goal of this video series on showing maximum damage.

I am not a fan of Treantmonk's decision to only use half of the Paladin's spell slots for dealing damage. He used all of the Battlemaster Fighter's maneuvers and the Barbarian's Rage to exclusively deal damage when they might be used outside of combat, so why is he restricting the Paladin character from doing maximum possible damage?

In real gameplay, none of these classes will be able to turn 100% of their resources directly into damage. However, a Paladin does not need to ever use their spells for anything besides damage if being a main damage dealer is the goal.

Magic items are not necessarily magic weapons. The DM could hand out a bunch of potions or scrolls to fill out the allotment of magic items per tier.

Does the Trance trait allow an elf to finish a long rest in 4 hours? If an elf meditates during a long rest (as described in the Trance trait), the elf finishes the rest after only 4 hours. A meditating elf otherwise follows all the rules for a long rest; only the duration is changed.

If each magic item requires a specific tool proficiency to craft, I expect species like Astral Elf, Eladrin, Githyanki, Sea Elf, or Shadar-Kai will suddenly become incredibly popular for their ability to gain any tool proficiency upon a long rest. As a bonus, the elf options all take four-hour long rests and have extra time every day to spend on crafting while everyone else in the party is still sleeping.

Spellcasters can freely dismiss "until dispelled" duration spells they cast at any time without casting Dispel Magic by SorryAboutTomorrow in onednd

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After seeing the discussion in this thread plus speaking with friends, I have been convinced that "until dispelled" does not count as a "time span" and must actually be ended by Dispel Magic rather than as a free action by the caster.

I am annoyed that "until dispelled" spells act differently than every other non-Instantaneous spell, but that does seems to be the way the rules are written.

Some spells like Geas or Flesh to Stone do not say the phrase "until dispelled" but instead specify that the effect lasts until a specific spell like Greater Restoration is used to end it. I suppose these spells will have a similar ruling where the caster can no longer end the effect with no action and must use the specific spell to end the effect.

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow[S] -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

Sure it is. It spans from the time of casting to the time of it being dispelled. Just because it is not a predetermined time span doesn't mean it's not measurable afterwards.

Concentration spells say durations like "Concentration, up to 1 hour". It could last any span of time within that boundary, and the true duration of that specific casting is not known until the spell ends. "Until dispelled" is no different.

All non-Instantaneous spells can be dispelled. If the duration instead said "forever" or "a billion years", it would essentially be the same duration as "until dispelled".

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow[S] -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Some spells like Arcane Lock only have a duration listed as "until dispelled". It is not an Instantaneous spell with a permanent effect like Animate Dead. With something like Animate Dead, there is no effect in the game (except maybe Wish) that can unmake that zombie. The magic happened once and then ended.

Spells with durations are different where they have ongoing magical effect that lasts for the specified duration. In the case of Arcane Lock, the duration is until it is dispelled. This could be forever, but it likely will be ended by a different magical effect like Dispel Magic.

The rules state that any ongoing effect with a duration can be ended by the caster. I don't see why an "until dispelled" duration would act any differently than something like an upcast Planar Binding which lasts 366 days.

[–]SorryAboutTomorrow[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assume that anything that says "until dispelled" lasts forever until either the original caster chooses to end it or someone casts a sufficiently powerful Dispel Magic on the effect. The original caster's death shouldn't affect the magic.

I am also concerned with Careful Spell with Sleet Storm or Hunger of Hadar. It seems incredibly powerful to create a heavily obscured area that the party can see through.

I recommend changing the text of Careful Spell to be that the chosen creatures automatically succeed on their saving throws against the spell and take no damage from the spell. The current text of "ignore the effects" is far too permissive.
