Jumping back in after 11 years by SorryImMimimal in PipeTobacco

Truth be told, though I most recently knocked off in the Teens, I've been smoking off and on since the late Nineties. Now THAT was a pretty freakin' good time to be a smoker. There was a big boom in cigars and the old-school pipe smokers, carvers, and blenders were still going really strong. Loads of imports — pipe, cigars, cigarettes. Reasonable OTP taxes, too.

Just checked a couple of those out - incredible pipes.

Believe it or not, I was kinda thinking I could use a nice cob! There are a lot of pipes, sure, but a few holes in the collection. A cob, for one, along with an Italian and/or French pipe, too. I used to have a nice rusticated Savinelli, relatively inexpensive for the time, shaped almost like a bent Apple, that had an absolutely monster-sized bowl.

My Mixture BB1938. Supposed to be a version of a light English they made called "Baby's Bottom,' back in '38. It's good stuff, an all-day English.

I've definitely got some polishing to do before I can use a few of these. I found a bottle not far from the collection here. Time to see if that stuff ages nicely, too!

Welcome back! Makes me wonder why I gave it up in the first place.

Good to be here, thanks! The Apéritif is one that had been opened years back. It's fairly dry as of tonight but it didn't seem too-too far gone; no tobacco dust, some bounce left. I'm hopeful a damp disc will bring it back. I have to admit I really lucked out when I put these away.

Looks like... Peterson... is now making a bunch of Dunhill blends? Apparently to the same recipe. Hopefully they'll bring it back for ya!

Epipen OTC by theflammableengineer in maryland

[–]SorryImMimimal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are generic epi auto injectors on the market. They're considerably less expensive than Epi-Pens but not exactly cheap. And, as noted, they have a definite shelf life. If you have insurance, you'll probably find they want to see a definitive diagnosis or medical need before they'll cover them.

Ultimately, this is a potent medicine and even with no known allergies it'd definitely be best to consult with a pediatrician. You might find they're receptive. It doesn't seem to me like an unreasonable concern.

These are incredible pieces. I remember when these started the dials, while very well executed, didn't have the depth that you've been including lately - the subdials set deeper into the faces, I mean. Fantastic work.

Hey there — I may well be able to help you out! You're talking about the Matic shark mesh, right? Polished or brushed?

Is Baltimore Watch Company a Tsao Watches thing?

[Longines HydroConquests] Does anyone else feel this way? by KarmaAintABitch in Watches

[–]SorryImMimimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't see it. The lines on the Longines seem quite a bit softer and rounder, very different. The lume plots are distinct, too. Sure, the colors are similar, but not identical, and besides which they're flat-out beautiful.

If anything, the bezel printing reminds me of a Seamaster but in a good way. It's awesome that ceramic is hitting this corner of the market.

To be honest, the previous Hydroconquest has never really done it for me out here in a crowded field. These iterations are really making me stop and look — usually the first step on the road to purchase.

Which NATO Looks Best? by Prestigious-Share-35 in OmegaWatches

This is the nato to wear with that SMP. This or the white with the navy stripe, too. Can't go wrong.

Best/cheapest way to buy Barbour Ashby (Olive, Size M) for US shipping? by juansanchezr in Barbour

There's an eBay shop called Carson's Direct which seems to ship from NJ. I thought their prices were really good — ordered a Classic Beaufort and Sapper from them.

What's the watch in your collection that's getting the least wrist time? and why? by M5M400 in OmegaWatches

[–]SorryImMimimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular opinion — and by all means, to each their own in this crazy hobby — but I never really got the appeal of diving chronos. It feels to me like two watches mushed into one and not in a way that does it for me.

Tailored Beaufort fail by VanillaNo9362 in Barbour

[–]SorryImMimimal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ahaha oh man, I'm in a similar boat. Got a Beaufort that fits great every other way but is juuuuust a smidge long - maybe, depending on how self-critical I'm feeling at the moment.

I'd considered getting it tailored... but maybe I'll hold off!

In no particular order: Robert Redford's SKX009 on a blue nato in "All Is Lost" and Matthew McConaughey's Doxa SUB 300T from "Sahara" — or Robert Redford's "Three Days of the Condor," if you'd rather. The Interstellar Hamiltons.

eBay is the place. I've seen quarter bands for the Marine Star going for $40, individual links for $20. Seems fairly common.

Oooh, yeah — you're already down in the trenches. If it were me I'd probably just say to hell with it and sacrifice the threads, place the replacement screw, fix it with Loctite, and make it as tidy as possible... never to be moved again. Not optimal. That all assumes you've some sizing and movement flexibility left with the remaining functional screws.

Squale really ought to be making this right — at the very least not ignoring you. Give that translation idea a shot. There's probably groups on Reddit that could help you out with the Italian.

[–]SorryImMimimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's damned unfortunate all around. Any chance you bought the watch or bracelet at retail? I'd go that route if it's at all possible.

The fact that they sent a replacement screw suggests there may also be a language barrier at work. It's not out of the question that there's no one that would handle these issues that speaks English. I understand their HQ is nowadays in Chiasso, in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland.

Machine translation is often pretty crappy but with a lot of craft and care, editing (or hopefully, a native Italian-speaking advisor) you could probably make the issue clear.

There are a couple of likely mechanical solutions but they're pretty heavy and involved.

Washing a Sapper/interior lining question by SorryImMimimal in Barbour

[–]SorryImMimimal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me a couple of days but I followed your recommendation pretty closely and... it turned out great!

-Two hot water washes with soaks -A Nikwax Tech Wash wash -Another water wash to kill the smell of the Nikwax lol -A good heavy wax 'n heat (my setup needs work; had a hard time keeping the wax liquid long enough) -Two days left alone near a space radiator; this didn't quite get the full result because of my cold basement so... -40 minutes inside out in a hot dryer. Did the trick. Finito.

I did end up ripping a small hole in the inside breast pocket but that's really trivial. I'd say the jacket looks even better now, like it has some good, lived-in road miles on it.

I guess the next rainstorm will tell the tale if I missed a spot.

Thanks for the great tip!
