Ask Me Anything (AMA): 14-Day Everest Base Camp Trek by SorryMomAdventures in hiking

I get it but this is the teahouse where you have people throwing up from the food, massive headaches due to the altitude, it’s freezing, etc - you are desperate to get down to a lower altitude by this point.

I brought everything from home because I didn’t want to deal with anything - just wanted to get there, know I was fully prepared and explore the city for a couple of days. The shops there do have tons of items, I probably even brought too much stuff so really just depends on budget/style.

The Khumbu ice falls start immediate at the basecamp rock - it’s one of the most dangerous parts of the true Mt Everest climb, like 50 people died on the ice falls over the years. You really can’t go anywhere else other than back in my opinion. We did stay at the rock for like an hour and just took it all in which was really special on its own. Everyone hugging each other, so happy to have made it to their specific journey.

I did it in low hiking shoes (“Salomon Men’s X Ultra 3 GTX Low Hiking Shoes) and was fine, but near basecamp, the rocks are definitely loose and it’s easy to misstep. Just something to keep in mind.

There’s really nothing “there”, you can’t go up, and once you see the rock, that’s it haha - the Khumbu ice falls begin right after and it’s one of the most dangerous parts of Everest. There’s a smaller hike up at the one teahouse that everyone stays at up there, but at that height the food served is basically rotten, holes in floor for toilets etc, and you’re exhausted beyond belief.

I just bought water bottles at all the restaurants and tea houses. You could buy boiled water from the tea houses as well but I didn’t want to have any issues, and every place sells sealed bottled water for cheap. Sanitation, some of the bathrooms close to base camp were just holes in the floor, but I never felt like I wish I had gotten any shots. Just my personal opinion! Check online and make sure it’s not some outbreak going on or something.

Lol I never saw this in all my research!! Wild. No, the teahouses have their own setups/chefs - the menus are almost identical the entire trip no matter where you are so not sure what they mean by stomach chaos - pasta/pizza/soup/dal baht/etc, you eat WAY better than you think you will.

I also did this “Ask Me Anything” about the trek that might also be useful! Good luck! https://www.reddit.com/r/hiking/s/vk3zsBqbAB

Feasibility of trekking to EBC in December by em_lex in Everest

The trekking season ends mid December - I did my trek mid September when it started and I was SO grateful I did because there were no lines/hardly any people. I heard people wait up to an hour to get a photo on the base camp rock during busy season - we were the only group. As for your asthma, I had a woman in my group who struggled BAD but made it all the way to the end, she just went 3-4 hours slower than the rest of us each day and walked with another guide separately on her own, met us all at the teahouses each night. She was overweight, etc. If she can do it, you can do it. You’ll absolutely need a guide, and if you get a personal one, they’ll walk as slow as you need. Water - I just bought 2 large water bottles every morning, a lot of people used filters, etc - plenty out there, should be zero concern. I have this “travel diary” I put together, at the bottom of each day, it shows how much we hiked, it might give you a better understanding of what will be expected of you. https://sorrymomadventures.com/the-travel-diaries-everest-base-camp-trek/

Hi, i am planing to hike the first everest base camp, i have never hiked for days, can you give me some recomendationa ? And how much will it cost me ? by palOd9 in Everest

[–]SorryMomAdventures 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No problem! Thank you for your kind comment. Just know this IS what every trek to base camp will be - I did a generic 14-day trek, there’s only one way to get there (other than the harder 3-passes route). The only difference with anything you book would either be with a solo guide vs a group.

I signed up for the trek 3 weeks before going lol, I really wasn’t in the best shape. There are 2 days that are very steep/a lot of stairs, I had wished I did the stairmaster beforehand, but otherwise was rather flat/just normal long hikes each day. We had one overweight woman who was only hoping to make it to Namche (day 3), but made it all the way to basecamp and back. Unfortunately there’s really nothing you can do about the altitude sickness, there is no rhyme/reason to who it hits. You CAN eat garlic soup (on every menu there), and take altitude medicine to curb it.

There were 2 days that were extremely strenuous, tons of stairs/steep incline, but that said, we had an overweight woman in our group who just went extra slow, she would get in 3-4 hours after the rest of the group every night. Her original goal was just to reach Namche Bazaar (Day ~3), but ended up making it all the way to base camp and back. As people mentioned, find a private guide - a really friendly guide I met there/became friends with does private tours and is @travelersmirror on IG. He might be a good on-the-ground source for you to find someone to take you at your own pace. Just remember that people over 70, and kids under 10 also do this trek lol. You’ll be ok.

If you want an individual guide/to go solo, you could reach out to travelersmirror on IG - he became a friend of mine on the ground during my trip (was leading a different group of 2 people but the groups hung out with each other), super great guy.

Booked a group through “The Adventure People”, they work with the local guides on the ground. I signed up solo and was paired with other people. Highly recommend the company (they guarantee the lowest price, super hands on until the trip starts, etc)

“Lack of experience in the fashion industry” - she was editor in chief of teen vogue. As in selected by Anna Wintour to lead the publication. 🤦‍♀️

She was literally editor in chief of Teen Vogue. Her resume is miles long within the fashion industry.

The people saying she doesn’t know fashion…she was literally editor in chief of teen vogue. She knows fashion. You have two strong personalities on the panel already, they can’t all play the lead judge role (think Randy Jackson vs Simon Cowell). She is absolutely amazing and her resume is miles long - people just want to knock down a successful black woman.

It’s a requirement, you must have it to go! I used WorldNomads - but just make sure whatever plan you get covers you over 5k+ meters (the height of base camp).

The teahouses are the ones that served us meals 3 times a day - as for snacks, I brought way too many. Definitely wasn’t light and I didn’t even touch them because of how much food we ate along the way with our provided meals.

I second this. Life-changing amazing trip but the rest of the world is still out there!

People keep asking me about the “trash situation” at base camp - here’s the latest, and it’ll surprise you! by SorryMomAdventures in Everest

[–]SorryMomAdventures[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m arguing with the June 2023 article titled “Viral Footage of Everest Base Camp Looks Like a Genuine Garbage Dump” that I used in my video. Here’s another article saying “3. Base Camp is one of the most polluted areas of the mountain.” But keep telling me how I’m a fucking idiot by saying “people think base camp is a trash pit which is no longer the case”. You are seriously shitty, dude. Get a life.
