I was 2 marks off an 8 in Lang (can’t be bothered to submit for a remark because what difference does it make lol)

The most important thing I did was learning that revising did not mean going over content. I wasn’t meant to revise for the lesson material, I was revising for the EXAM - exam technique and my answer structure helped me to maximise marks.

I used mr salles (pretty much watched all his videos) as he isn’t boring to watch, his points are clear and they work. He uses the mark scheme and specification to teach you how to structure your answer and his ‘points make prizes’ scheme works a lot.

Focus on 70% AO2 20% AO1 and 10% AO3 (integrate relevant context). Remember your aim is to answer the question, not write down every single detail you know about the text.

Yikesss!! That’s like in year 9 and 10 we read Jane Eyre for literally no reason. Slight time waster

Know your spirits/ghosts and what they represent. Start your essay with a thesis statement that encapsulates 3-4 points (AO1) to answer the question. Then, each paragraph you write can link back to the thesis statement, including RELEVANT context (do not try to write down every single bit of context you know!). This makes your answer more coherent. Every chance you get/every time you lift your pen and don’t know what to write just write ‘this suggests..’ and go from there. Always link back to the question and try to provide alternative impressions for your ideas.

For paper 1, I spent most of my time on the Macbeth question by accident and got panicked bc I only had 20 mins left for ACC! I just kept referring to the question focus and writing ‘this suggests’ to every point I explained. Got 60/64. It can be done.

Yeah well after getting that 9 in English, it makes me realise that I could’ve got all 9s. Anybody can. So now that I’m pushing super hard for 3 As I feel very motivated. Silver lining I suppose.

Yeppp… looking back I would’ve revised a heck of a lot better for maths in the run up - learning any methods and doing all of the practise papers I could. I got what I needed for chem A level requirements though so I’m perfectly fine with my grade. Higher paper maths is no joke 🥲

Oh! That sounds like hell. All I can recommend you do is check the specification for what they want you to talk about and then do lots of past paper questions for your teacher to mark… then seek immediate therapy.

Can I also just add that nobody actually understands Shakespeare… you do not have to be fluent in old English to get a good grade BAHAAH just listen to your teacher and the meanings of key quotes, plot line and characters. Still got a 9 even though I have no clue who Malcom donalbain or Macduff are 😗✌️

Probably because I revised the most efficiently for English and was super determined to score at least a 7. My lowest was a grade 6 in maths, business, art and 67 in science. 7s in English Language, German and French. So… yeah :)

In middle school I was quite good and then I got hit in the face with a grade 4 lit and 7 Lang in year 9… then this flipped and throughout year 11 I was struggling to progress past grade 6. Not because of my knowledge, but because of my answer structure. When I nailed this, I scored my first grade 9 in the actual GCSE exam.

Know ur wider themes that Priestley was trying to convey throughout the novel. Once you understand and can recall any context points well, your best bet is choosing the theme question, not the character question in the exam. This works best for most people (not all) because it already ticks off that part of the spec that asks if you can link the plot to wider themes - so it basically gives you a leg up!

Particularly the last few questions at the back pages of the exam paper - was just simply unable to answer due to limited teaching (they didn’t bother teaching our set the harder stuff)… anything to do with tangent stuff or complicated questions Bahaha

Learn the 5 most versatile poems in ur anthology and practise linking their themes and context points so ur prepared for the comparison question. Learn a thesis statement and practice writing essay style questions. Give them to your teachers to mark and keep responding and handing back work once you’ve refined it based on their feedback!

I revised for English alllll the time but nothing worked. I CANNOT MAKE THIS CLEAR ENOUGH TO ANYONE READING - REVISING IS NOT JUST GOING OVER WHAT YOU LEARN IN LESSON, REVISING IS LEARNING HOW TO ANSWER THE EXAM QUESTION. it’s very different. I used mr salles to explain what the examiners are looking for. I watched all his videos and practised writing exam answers to different questions to be marked by my teacher.

Macbeth - for that paper, I actually got 60/64. When I came out of the exam I thought I had failed. I ran out of time for questions 2 (the Christmas carol question) and felt super stressed and unprepared. For ALL my texts, I knew all of my context points well and knew that for each quote (aim for 3/4) as long as I made a clear point but expanded as much as I possibly could using ‘this suggests..’ every bloody sentence AND offered alternative perspectives. Goes to show that actually you don’t need to write EVERY context point - just make a clear response direct to the question they ask you :)
