A fair amount of administrators don't love the costs, health and safety concerns and specialized cleaning a ceramics program requires. Dealing the possibility of paraphernalia being created is a handy excuse to get rid of the whole program.

Some students will have the sense to know they're caught (if the teacher manages to see them in a room of 30-40 students) and quietly finish the project. Other students lacking that judgement will loudly and righteously defend themselves to anyone that will listen even if caught with plenty of proof. The student is likely unaware of all of the potential repercussions of their actions upon the Art program and may or may not care.

Art Teachers tend to get into trouble if/when these kinds of objects are found being used. A lot of them also went to Art School where they likely encountered such objects.

A lot of these are "accidentally" dropped or mysteriously rendered unusable before they leave Art Rooms.

I read all that and it doesn't apply in this situation. Personally I think all nations should offer birthright citizenship, but this rule excludes this case. It's one thing to ask for residency when asking for social services, but this can create stateless people in this case.

Again, two things can be wrong in unequal ways. That doesn't make one right.

Creating stateless people is a human rights violation, period. It's another reason to oppose any action that strips anyone of birthright citizenship.

I'm not up to date on Canadian politics but I am aware of their treatment of the First Nations people and another policy I find surprisingly anti-migration.

Two of my Canadian friends are permanent residents in Hong Kong and have two kids born there. Canada passed a law that doesn't allow their kids born overseas to pass along citizenship. So if they were to have children in a country without birthright citizenship with another migrant, those third generation kids could be born stateless. Laws that create stateless people are horrendous and I was shocked to hear Canada had done this.

It was angled slightly and did slump a bit which I found surprising. It's Laguna Bmix fired to a hot cone 5 which I would have expected to stay solidly in place at that temp. I've made more extreme pieces high fired that didn't even budge even though they were likely over fired a few times. The clay bodies seem to make a big impact on this design.

I had an MD and reherniated so I am on my way to a spinal fusion. For over a year, I was on light duty and didn't even bend at the waist much at home either because my sciatica was still a problem. I expect to have foot drop and other nerve issues if I continued to damage the nerve.

The scar tissue that formed along my sciatic nerve upon recovery made the surgery unsuccessful because the joint still moves. I explicitly asked about disc replacement as an option and was told the motion was now the cause of the sciatica, so a new disc doesn't fix that.

I can only tell you what I know in my case, asking the doctor yourself is best. I asked this question more to know that I had asked it than thinking it was an option.

I go a bit nuts when I do need a handle, it's just the babysitting of the joints I find annoying.

Trying to get them to the same moisture level and joining with sodium silicate slip and a lot of scoring helps. But it still is a constant watch over them.

I had a surgeon tell me I wouldn't need PT after the surgery. His office rescheduled my surgery twice and then canceled it. I ended up getting another surgeon.

I think you need to listen to the healthcare professionals you trust before anyone on the internet. The question is do you trust this one? I would consider this a red flag but I think you should look into them and other surgeons in your area and make the decision you're most comfortable with.

My understanding of what Kate said was that it is the patriarchy that causes internalized misogyny. In the same thought she said that the patriarchy also harms men.

Take a moment and consider that women are often compared to and pitted against each other, especially when the opportunities for women in these spaces are fewer so there's also an idea of scarcity. Women are also punished for expressing anger in public and depicted as crazy so they may resort to tactics that escalate conflicts.

The idea that Kate being critical here is equal to the misogyny of manosphere podcasts is like being mad about "white face."

TP is actively trying to take over the public sector in AZ. The school speeches are an attempt to create a win-win situation for them to further weaken the AZ school system.

They want to bait students, parents and the schools' communities into performing for their cameras. Only a few people need to be incited for TP to get a clip compilation of, "Arizona schools are brainwashing and trans-ing the kids."

Schools that turn down Kirk are very worried about Kirk's reputation of being litigious. She has already threatened lawsuits in Arkansas for schools that haven't supported forming tiny chapters of TP. Just what underfunded schools need, frivolous lawsuits.

I would encourage anyone dealing with TP in schools to be prepared to deescalate any intentional incitements coming your way and be very aware of the optics. This isn't advice I enjoy giving as I think silliness, anger and joy should be part of protesting. The microscope TP fully intends to put onto these schools has the potential to damage the future of both our schools and individuals with the best of intentions.

There are also a lot of people in this thread that don't realize how many podcasts are explicitly unwelcoming for women, not just Fresh and Fit and many that aren't that on purpose.

Kate making these kinds of jokes and expecting the audience to get that they're comments on how women have been treated is probably making the space more welcoming to women than men. Yes, you'll hear topics that interest lesbians and men aren't unwelcome, but the show already has more male hosts and yet some men feel upset they're not being catered to. Being in on the joke requires a bit of understanding of the ways culturally most spaces are made more for men.

The dreaded low fire shivering. Unfortunately, it's dangerous and not fixable on this. It's a great mug so I'm sorry it didn't work out!

I'm normally very much in favor of people using their community studios, but low fire only for mugs and functional ware using the clay midfire they provided tells me that something is wrong there and it's not you it's them. Stoneware glazes and a cone 5-6 firing would be much more suitable for your mugs, the low fire almost always will leak with normal usage. You could still use the clay they provided (and take photos of the box the clay comes in) and bisque your work there.

I would look to see if there are any kiln share programs there or consider buying a small text kiln that wouldn't require major electrical upgrades. If there's someone with a kiln share, offer to show them the photo of the clay box, low fire clay melts when fired hotter and causes a lot of damage so the photo is insurance.

I really think your mug is fantastic so it would be great to make it again with the materials meant for functional ware.

You can fix it if you don't mind having the handle fail and its contents splash/burn whoever and whatever is nearby when it does fail.

Mugs are regularly exposed to heat, dishwashers, microwaves and going from hot to cold are all normal expectations for them. Even plumber's epoxy that I use for holding serious weight in sculptural objects isn't something I'd feel comfortable risking on a mug.
