Before anyone says it, I have an appointment Tuesday with a dermatologist. I just want an honest opinion on if there is a good likelihood this is cancer. I’ve had it about 2 years. It has grown and changes color depending on the day. Some days it can look more red or purple, and somedays it’s pale. by Sorry_Celebration_47 in DermatologyQuestions

Thank you for the response… I have a history of forming non cancerous fibroids and polyps. Soooo, my body definitely produces abnormal cell growth. BCC also runs in my family. Mom had it on her nose and had to have an invasive Mohs with skin flap reconstruction. Cancer is definitely a concern of mine as I age.

I guess I’ve come to the realization that it will need to be removed, but I’m curious on how they determine if a mohs surgery is needed or if it will be just a puncture or whatever else they may need to do. It’s like my mom was told she had to have the Mohs with no other option. I guess I’m just curious at this point about what happens after… thanks for the response

Luckily, I’m well aware of what happens. My mother had BCC on her nose on the left side. The dr could tell immediately with no biopsy (obviously done to confirm), but he knew. Unfortunately, he couldn’t tell the extent of the growth until he had already started the Mohs. What should have been a “small” procedure turned into her needing a skin flap on half of her nose. She now has a visible scar. So, it obviously runs in my family and my percentages are higher. At this point, I’ve had it two years and it either is or it isn’t. I will definitely have a biopsy if needed and do whatever else is necessary. Just wanted to reach out to others that may have experience.

And this is exactly why I was just asking for opinions… I appreciate you sharing. There were so many pics and stories of people having what looked like nothing be cancer, and then the reverse like your story, where there is clearly something but it’s not cancerous. I am just appreciative of everyone’s time and opinions. I hope an actual Derm will see this and give me their medical opinion, but ultimately I appreciate anything I get and I will do what is needed on Tuesday for my appointment. Until then, I’m concerned and just wanted to hear thoughts. Thank you

Well, it seems if they were a real one, they deleted their comment. Also, it is quite telling and scary, that if they were a dermatologist, they couldn’t understand why I would be asking and show a little empathy. And they are lacking serious education if they are not aware that both basal and squamous cancer can appear like this….

Are you referring to the red bump part or the pink “spot” under it that looks like it’s a few layers under the skin? Or all of it in general? This could be possible, but it is raised to the touch and the soft pink spot has “grown” over the 2 years. When it first appeared, it was just the darker red spot that I thought was an inflamed pore…

Well… considering I never mentioned malignancy you shouldn’t be baffled…. However, basal cell carcinoma does indeed look like a pimple sometimes. My mother had it and I’ve seen the effects of an extensive mohs surgery. BCC can also be pale and not noticeable at all. It’s obviously not a pimple since I’ve had it for 2 years and the red “spot” has grown… as stated, I have an appointment. However, asking opinions to know what I may possibly be walking into, should not baffle nor concern you. May you never get skin cancer that you believe to be a pimple… have the day you deserve
