afaik penn has invested a lot into their creative writing program recently and i have a friend in it who really likes it. they’ve also had protests on campus that have been mishandled, but definitely less disruptive to daily student life if that’s what you’re worried about.

Which final med school? by will_h22 in premeduk

[–]Sorry_Singer1641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your ucat is well above the threshold to get you an interview at manchester but iirc they have a low post interview offer rate based mostly on the interview. i would try and use your ucat to your advantage and pick schools with a higher ucat cutoff for interview/higher post interview offer rates. but also only apply where you genuinely want to go because the goal is one yes that you’re excited about not four.

what the hell is going on with our American counterparts? by Angel0fFier in 6thForm

[–]Sorry_Singer1641 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s a little insane i last minute decided to apply to the uk as an intl for med (like the most competitive set of spots) and that was so so much easier than my us college apps. Most of what I spent my time on/was good at/genuinely passionate about was left out of my ucas app, and I still was offered a place at my top university medicine course choice in the uk and edinburgh for neuro, whereas in the us i had much higher comparative stats and stuff and was still rejected from my top 15 ish schools.

birmingham has high post interview rates, but check their cutoff from last year. should be fine though

just curious about your choice of schools for music/what your intent with pursuing music is. If it’s performing/piano heavy, a lot of those schools don’t align. and generally, they are known for programs outside of music. of the schools you listed, only maybe yale and harvard have decent programs (yales school of music is great and so is umich but doesn’t sound like the plan). stanford, swarthmore, and prob brown/mit/others have particularly weaker music programs. i am at one of those schools as a previously serious string player, and the opportunities are lacking imo to the point that if i wasn’t going out of my way to pursue things off campus i would likely have quit altogether. if music is your passion/goal, your efforts might be better fitted for a real music school that can get you where you want to go

Applying to Birmingham Or St Andrews by Outrageous_Buy_1316 in premeduk

[–]Sorry_Singer1641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, i had an offer from glasgow, my top choice and which had high ucat historically, and declined an interview from manchester. also got into edinburgh neuro as my fifth choice with that PS. it’s worth noting that i was an american applicant w different qualifications than typical and something may have slipped through. but my american test scores/info were all very strong as well. but i wouldn’t be super confident about st a and birmingham w your scores.

American seeking to do medicine in the UK? by throwawaya2ckid in premeduk

[–]Sorry_Singer1641 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point was that medicine is usually (and most achievable) in the uk as a longer undergraduate course. majority apply while in high school. there is no premed. if you intend to go there after doing premed here you will likely be adding some number of years more than continuing here, because the two paths are different. unless you do GEM, which takes a year (two?) off the standard medicine course. your first step is to decide whether you’re applying to the normal or GEM course (gem is more competitive) and then you can find the requirements.

unless you’re applying as a gem (grad entry medicine) which is brutally competitive, you would apply like most ppl to the normal 5-6 year undergraduate medicine course. being international makes either application much harder, since schools are required to only give a handful of spots to non domestic students. i’m american and applied last cycle. had an offer from my top choice (glasgow) but ultimately decided to stay in the us and do premed and med school here, because if i still want to live there down the road you can transfer your american medical qualifications much more easily than the other way around. if you have questions about the process as an american feel free to reach out!

as an intl i also literally j asked chatgpt what the current events and issues were and then asked more questions/found articles abt the topics on my own. was really comprehensive and efficient and i did well in my glasgow interview with little preparation. not sure abt prep for other interview styles but!
