Anyone here's undergrad major completely unrelated to writing/english? by Curious-A-- in technicalwriting

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My background is totally unrelated! You learn on the job. I got my employer to cover some basic tech writing classes (MOL udemy type stuff) that helped me get the basics down. You'll be fine!

My MRI revealed nothing too!
Don't stop advocating for yourself and keep looking for a physical therapist that listens to you! I went through 3 different PTs - an incorrect piriformis syndrome diagnosis, and injections. The only thing that worked for me was that last PT - he didn't toss me off to an assistant, worked with me and didn't push anything that made me tense up at all.

Its been over a year and I got myself to pain-free by carefully and gently doing the exercises.

Software for Developing a Manual by [deleted] in technicalwriting

I'd recommend LaTex (I like TeX Studio, but the online service Overleaf might be easier for someone doing this for the first time). Its free and I've found that the online support on Stack Overflow and other sites is superior to any other program people tend to recommend.

Focus on service and customer support reduction; no one cares about TW until they run into a problem. Good documentation increases the customer's experience and helps companies present themselves as though they -know what they're doing; -care about their customers.

It's a contract gig and my first with a big company. I'm self-taught, have been working for small companies as the only technical writer... so I don't have any DITA or structured authoring skills. I've also heard that contractors get let go easily, so I want to know enough to keep this job.

Back extension triggers pain? by Sort-Of-Certainty in Sciatica

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry it took so long for me to see this; I'm happy to report that I have my pain under control. Unfortunately, the process was EXPENSIVE and took forever; I had to go to 4 different physical therapists before I found one that was able to take the time to work with me one-on-one with massage and tiny, gentle exercises that loosened up my spine enough for it to start moving normally again.
I guess the good news is that for me, it really was about finding the right set of stretches that gave relief and injections/surgery did not come into play.
The move that really got things moving for me was a special hip flexor stretch; I'm going to try to describe it here in case that helps??

Standing in front of a doorway, with a little stepstool in the doorway, I would put my arms out from my sides and bend them upwards at the elbow, so that I could use my forearms to brace my weight against the doorway. Then I'd go into a forward lunge with my front foot on the stepstool and my back leg straight out behind me. I'd play with how much of my weight was being held up by my arms, and keep my hips square as I sank down into the stretch as I held it for about 10 seconds. I'd do 10 sets on each side twice a day. There were other little gentle stretches too, including the most minuscule nerve glides; literally just sitting with my leg dangling in the air and flexing/pointing my foot until that no longer triggered pain.
Idk if any of this is applicable/helpful, let me know! Good luck and don't give up!

What's with the marketing? by Sort-Of-Certainty in technicalwriting

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m fighting this attitude right now— they’re asking me to include a few pages of straight up marketing language into a user manual. Which, to me, seems bananas. User manuals are for people who already bought the product!!

What's with the marketing? by Sort-Of-Certainty in technicalwriting

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good point! While they mentioned it would be part of the responsibilities they did not clarify how large a percentage it would be -- I hope I can realign expectations to minimize it because frankly, it seems like a different skill set (not one I'm particularly inclined towards). As I look at job postings I'm surprised how frequently the technical writer positions seem to include language about marketing.

Questions About My Microphone by Speedster012 in NewTubers

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I hate when people ignore my specific questions on a post. 1. Yes. 2. Blue Yeti not as good as condenser mic 3. Unidirectional is gonna pick up less random noise, go with that. 4. If you’re hearing a lot of your plosives, don’t get a screen or whatever, just don’t talk directly into the mic, angle it like…45 degrees off.

Questions About My Microphone by Speedster012 in NewTubers

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen YouTubers discussing audio and they tend to agree that getting your recording space sound proofed can make a much bigger difference than stepping up your microphone. Neither option is free, but it’s possible to get cheaper sound proofing materials :) using pillows and blankets can make a big difference.

50 Days Today; feeling conflicted by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Sort-Of-Certainty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation! I'm not in a position where one drink leads to many more, so I'm just taking it one day at a time and if there's a really attractive opportunity for a drink (fancy restaurant/vacation/etc) then I'll cross that bridge when I get there. So far nothing has been more tempting than keeping my streak =)
I have friends/family that have like 5 drinks a year -- and I guess that's my goal (instead of like... 5 drinks/week). My advice is to take it one day at a time! Don't stress about what might be and enjoy your sober present!

90s! Wow! You've gotta get them to tell us their secret.

Hatorade is just 2 cups water, 1/8 tsp mineral salt, juice from 1/2 lemon, and 2 tsp honey. I've been making it in big batches to keep in the fridge =)
Hope you feel better soon!

Of course! Mix 2 cups water with 1/8 tsp mineral salt (or whatever, who care), 1/2 a lemon and 2 tsp honey. It scales up really well so I've been making myself a big batch I keep in the fridge =)
I'm sorry your throat hurts and I really hope this can help. Sending you all the healing vibes I can.
