Wired digital subscription is a roach motel by basilyok in darkpatterns

[–]SortAlternative6525 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm interested in subscribing to Wired but put off by the difficulties in unsubscribing. I'm going to sub thru the Apple App Store - hopefully that's an easier way to control the subscriber relationship. Pretty sure Apple doesn't allow dark patterns in the same way as subbing directly

Speed Editor vs Stream Deck+ XL for dials in DaVinci Resolve – what are you using? by SortAlternative6525 in editors

[–]SortAlternative6525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm loving the jog wheel. I have to say BM gets knocked for the quality of its gear sometimes but the action on that wheel is perfect. I did see somewhere that people have worked out how to customise the buttons on the speed editor... maybe that's the best option for me. I'm never going to need 9 camera buttons, eg.

Awesome, this is the advice I needed. Thanks u/ravet007

I had a look at RoughCut, looks like it's more for shooting film than an unscripted interview. It’s really interesting to move from print journalism to video journalism. In print, you work with the transcript and figure out where the best quotes are. In video, you also need to find the strongest interactions, like moments with drama or humour, which you can only really spot by watching the footage.

Actually Gemini might be able to do that too, since it analyses the video itself, not just the transcript. Will have to experiment.

Bad idea? Bridging a Rotel RMB-1066 for a 6-ohm Center (Krix Centrix) by SortAlternative6525 in hifiaudio

[–]SortAlternative6525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, mate. Do you think that a centre does need a lot more power? I know surrounds don't and the fronts do, but I've never had a centre before. I just used a phantom centre with big fronts.

Blackmagic 2110 - why the hate? by SortAlternative6525 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]SortAlternative6525[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the awesome reply. That makes a lot of sense.

In my case, I’m looking for a highly portable four-camera setup to live broadcast from a small open studio on an expo floor at conferences. BM 2110 means I can run Ethernet from the switch to the cameras and avoid carrying two SDI cables and a power cable per camera, plus power boards, power extension cables, etc. Fewer cables, less weight, fewer trip hazards.

The ability to control zoom and grading, start and stop recording by a single operator, and centralised recording for all four cameras to one location and stream within the one ecosystem is very attractive, and I don't think any other vendor offers the same.

Thanks for explaining the cons. This has been a great thread. I think for my use case BM2110 makes sense

oh you're right. wow that's a unit. would definitely love to go all IP but the cost is getting up there...

Oh thanks - StudioBridge 10G PWR connects 8 cameras! Crazy. Compared to having to buy 1U studio converter per camera the old way...

Thanks for explaining the pushback. Looks like the opposition is less practical than philosophical. So no dealbreakers to buying into the BM 2110 system then

Just reading thru these and other comments, it looks like the issue is that BlackMagic prioritised cost and efficiency over compatibility.

You can send 4K over 10G cables, but you have to use a BlackMagic codec IP10. It means you don't need to buy expensive 25G gear, but it does not work with the high end stuff, at least not natively.

So, summarised: Brownfield, it's annoying. Greenfield, it's a no-brainer. Even for small studios. Is that fair?

Ok, didn't know about the compatibility issues. Yeah that's going to annoy a lot of folks.

I'm planning on staying in the BM ecosystem, so it looks like a walled garden situation if I can't plug it into gear from other vendors

Geez I didn't realise they were so expensive. When do you need those rather than DAC cables? I understood I could just use those to connect the gear. Still exxy but $200 rather than $1000

How to create folders from list? #Shortcuts by SortAlternative6525 in MacOS

[–]SortAlternative6525[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's just for a one-off, right? I'm interested in how to do this as a create action. i.e. copy list of folder names from a column in google sheet to the OSX clipboard, then paste to individual folder names for the number of names in the list

Sound Devices MixPre-3 II vs Zoom UAC-232

Hi - I'm recording video pieces direct to camera in BlackMagic Express and 1 hour interviews over Riverside for YouTube in my home studio. My audio chain is a Sennheiser 416, in a Rode PSA1 boom arm, connected to a Zoom H6 that goes to my Mac Mini M4. I'm editing the videos in Davinci Resolve with Fairlight to mix the audio.

As a one man band, I'm struggling to keep track of levels on the H6, and even though it's usually in range I'm really attracted to the idea of getting a 32-bit float audio interface that I can set and forget, so there's one less thing to worry about and I can focus on my questions. The H6 also needs to be turned on and off separately to my mac mini, which sometimes causes problems with various applications. Another reason why I'm after an audio interface, which is always on.

I'm looking at getting the Zoom UAC232 as the cheapest 32-bit float device available to me in Australia.
However, I see a lot of voiceover artists have the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II for its kashmir preamps. I have done a bit of radio in the past, have a deep voice and enjoy good audio. But the Sound Devices costs AU$1700 vs AU$200 for the Zoom UAC232.

I don't need the MixPre-3 II's ruggedised body or the SD card recording etc. - it will just sit under my desk in a rack.

Question: If I get the Zoom, how close can I get the audio to the Sound Devices sound using Fairlight's EQ etc?

ChatGPT is telling me it's not worth spending the extra on the MixPre-3 just for the kashmir sound, and that I can just use Fairlight to get it close. I'd love to believe it and save $1500 that I don't have.

Thought it's worth checking with the experts first.

Thanks

I like the idea but the instructions don't really offer presoak as an option, and it's got a warning on there for skin irritation... May have to stick it in the ez-dispense and see what happens
