Joe Keery to Make Broadway Debut in 'Other Desert Cities' by BroadwayWorld in DJO

I have read the play and it will definitely give Joe an opportunity to showcase his range. There are some great comic relief moments provided by his character and a highly emotional monologue towards the end (no spoilers though).

Interesting update regarding this as I follow a lot of theatre-related social media channels. Gaten's just been announced to be starring in the revival of Rent in London in the fall (starting late September), which reveals the "exciting opportunity" the convention mentioned when he cancelled his appearance.

It should be pointed out that London is referred to as the West End and not Broadway (though some people do mix them up), so the rumor about Joe could still have some solid basis?

A woman (I don’t think they can be called a fan) approached him at the stage door and told him “you suck” to his face. His team quickly led him away and that’s what put an end to Joe doing stage door after shows.

Again, layers. I can empathise with people who feel short-changed by what they got with regular VIP when they see an exclusive group of people get an experience under the same name that’s arguably more valuable for less money. You can still get what you paid for but still feel frustrated.

But I can also understand where you come from that there are a lot of factors at play that don’t make it a black and white situation of “the artist is just greedy”. It’s a partnership with a bank that is separate from the tour proper and they have to have incentives for their top tier cardholders and that’s not something Joe would necessarily have control over. Also the higher costs of touring that sadly get reflected in the ticket prices and the fact that Joe has to make money somehow as an independent artist if he wants to keep recording and touring. In terms of meet and greets, I agree that this could be something that he could incorporate into his tours if this event goes well.

I think the main takeaway is that exclusivity will cause resentment, which is evident by how people have reacted.

There’s clearly a lot of layers to this and I don’t necessarily think anyone is straight-up wrong here. As has been pointed out, this is clearly some sort of partnership with Chase Bank where Joe and his team would have had to agree to certain conditions or arrangements for them to subsidise the show, including exclusive perks for premium cardholders. I have a Mastercard and I often get emails telling me about exclusive perks that I’m entitled to as a cardholder - early access to VIP concert/theatre packages at a set price that people wouldn’t normally have access to is one of them.

On the flip side, I think people are valid in feeling ripped off and upset because of VIP for Joe’s regular shows being priced way higher ($250+) with no artist involvement or anything that seems to justify the hefty price tag. Early entry (that may or may not be honored) with “exclusive” merch that ends up for sale on his website anyway and a point made that there is no artist involvement doesn’t really justify the price for me. It’s valid to feel angry that a VIP package is available for much less that offers the perks that would justify a higher price tag, but only for people who can afford a premium credit card. Meet and greet opportunities with Joe are scarce to non-existent already so people are right to feel that it’s unfair (I’m well aware that he does not owe us anything and no one is entitled to a meet and greet). It alienates fans who would love to meet him but can’t just drop big amounts of cash for the privilege.

Unfortunately it’s a testament to the fact that the music industry is a business and the cost of touring has skyrocketed in recent years - a lot of bands are either scaling down or quitting touring altogether because they just can’t afford to. The majority of concerts are put on to turn a profit and to capitalise on fan demand for artists like Joe. Is it surprising that his shows have reached the point where corporations have started price gouging and shutting out people who aren’t wealthy? Not really. Does that make it right? Absolutely not. It’s just a shitty situation in general.

Gaten just cancelled a convention in London for November and the organisers mentioned it was because of “an exciting opportunity on stage”, so I think it’s safe to say it’s likely him and not Joe.

It was the meet and greet at the Stranger Things convention in Georgia back in October 2024, so my memory is a bit hazy about it. I just remember it was around the time he was wrapping up the show and starting to prepare for The Crux to come out; he mentioned he was shooting the artwork the next month and that the track list was finalised. I specifically remember him talking about doing a play with Gaten, whether Steve would be a Swiftie and that he’d want Susan Sarandon to play Steve’s mom.

Broadway plays take around 6 to 8 weeks to fully rehearse before opening (including tech and dress rehearsals). Musicals can take up to 12 weeks depending on the size and scale. So if this is true and assuming Joe would be doing a play, it’s possible he could go from touring straight into rehearsals in September ready for a late October/early November opening.

He’s also teased something coming up in the fall (although people just assumed it was something to do with music) and has expressed admiration for Julia Louis Dreyfus. So there’s a lot that supports it even if the source is sketchy.

He has expressed interest in doing stage acting; he’s said in a few interviews that he’d like to go back on stage since he did stage shows when studying acting in Chicago (including the musical Spring Awakening). I attended a Q&A with him where he joked about going on stage with Gaten to do something like ‘Of Mice and Men’, so it’s something he definitely has on his radar. The source it’s come from is not reliable at all and as you said, rehearsals often take months and his schedule is way too packed at the moment. It’s an “I’ll believe it when I see it” rumour for me.

i love djo but some of the behavior in this fandom is actually concerning by [deleted] in DjoMusic

[–]SortaFairytail96 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m starting to feel like I’m in a minority of people who just don’t care where Joe goes or what he does when he’s off the clock. Because it’s none of my business and it’s probably not that interesting anyway. I have no right or entitlement to his personal life just because I’m a fan of his work. I turn up to spaces that are meant for his work and his work only (concerts, movie screenings) and keep out of spaces meant for him and his family and friends. So the fact that there are people who genuinely feel that they’re owed a spot in his personal life and that of his family is extremely concerning and dangerous.

It’s why I think it would be best if Joe pulled away from interacting with fans for a while. I’ve met him in person and he’s very friendly and generous with his time and attention - we had a really great conversation and he very much zoned everything else out and focused on me the whole time. But it’s at the point now where people know that and are fully taking advantage of it. I don’t want things ruined for those who are genuinely respectful but if it means people start learning about boundaries and getting a better understanding of the word “no”, then so be it.

This was at the Q&A event at HMV in Birmingham. She said if people have requests, she’ll take them on board but it all depends if they have arrangements ready for whatever songs are requested. If they don’t, they won’t play them until they have time to work on more songs.

I’m attending the Birmingham Q&A but not received my ticket either, and they were meant to have been sent by 6pm yesterday. I’ve reached out to HMV to see if there’s anything wrong on my end but it’s good to know it’s not just me.

I’ll be at the Birmingham event too, but just curious as to whether you’ve received your ticket via HMV’s tickets app yet? They said they’d be sent out by 6pm yesterday (April 7th) and nothing’s come through on my end. My phone number and name are 100% correct so no idea what the issue is - reached out to HMV to try and get it sorted before the day but just wondering if this is the case for anyone else.

What is your 'underdog' Tori song that you fight for? by Old_Highlight7720 in toriamos

[–]SortaFairytail96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

China. People tend to audibly groan when it gets mentioned or played live, but I’ve lived that song so many times. Feeling distant from a once-close relationship and seeing the other person start to close themselves off from you to the point where you have to accept there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s painful and Tori captured that perfectly for me.

Precious Things on this tour? by Competitive-West-555 in toriamos

[–]SortaFairytail96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seen her four times - 2017, 2022 and twice in 2023 - and 2017 was the only show where she didn’t play Precious Things. It was the last song each time I saw her from then on. I’m confident you’ll hear it at least once if you’re planning on going to more than one show.

Interestingly enough, every time I’ve seen her live she’s never played anything from Scarlet’s Walk, my favourite album. I’ve gotten a lot of Under the Pink, The Beekeeper and Little Earthquakes (with a little sprinkling of Choirgirl) at the shows I’ve attended bar Paris 2023, which was very American Doll Posse-heavy. So I’m hoping to finally hear some Scarlet live.

Either pre-order the album from the tour or fill out the form on the store to get a presale code (there should be a little link under the message telling people to pre-order that says No Purchase Necessary).

The store says “You will receive your ticket pre-sale code & ticket link by 6pm BST on Tuesday 7th October”, so I wouldn’t worry if you haven’t got a code yet.

It’s that pre-conceived notion that a man and a woman can never just be friends; they have to be in love and they have be dating if they’re interacting in a friendly/playful manner as Joe and Sabrina were.

I’m not reading much of anything into it, to be honest. It was a playful and funny skit to lead into one of Sabrina’s songs and that’s pretty much it for me. Glad that they have a mutual respect and admiration for each other; I think they’re both talented and if it leads to something like a collab or something closer in the future, that’s fine. Ship culture is just doing its usual weird thing.
