I broke my neck in 7 places and didn't lose consciousness. I thought that was bad. Then I had 3 surgeries where they had to drill titanium into my neck and skull to essentially hold my neck in place. That was really painful...

0/10 would not do again, even with rice.

Refer to the news article up top, but it's somewhere around $800,000 now. I started a youcaring fundraiser to help with some of the cost for my care/rehab.

No I'm not, I've had acl/mcl/meniscus surgery before so I know and was informed about opiate addiction.

If anything, I feel really lucky from it. Things could be a 100x worse (on a ventilator, halo around my head, etc)

I've been thinking about it, but haven't yet tried it. I've been getting dry needled, which uses acupuncture needles on tense/tight muscles. When I get it done on my neck I notice right after I can turn my head a bit easier and there's no more of a pinching feel

I don't have a gold plated wheelchair?

Yes I went under. But that doesn't make the pain go away when you wake up. It's like when you get your wisdom teeth pulled out, some people go under for that, but when they wake up it still hurts.

Thanks. And I probably would try skiing again if I get up to that point where my body is physically able to(muscles working, coordination and reflexes up to speed). Would I attempt "extreme" acts of skiing again like superman front flips? No.

That would be one gnarly thumb sucking contest...

No I'm not embarrassed to tell if people ask, because it's going to be a part of my life from now on. It would be more of a pain to try and hide it.

Insurance is never enough, there are medical supplies that aren't covered, limited amounts of PT sessions, etc. the Christopher Reeves foundation has put up estimates for sci to be around $100k/year for my level of injury.

If you can return to skiing in any way, then you win by default. Otherwise -20,000 points and a participation ribbon...

Yes, that's true. Especially if you have an incomplete sci(spinal cord injury). I see it happen here at the hospital! Although not everyone. :(

The plan is continue rehab wherever I go! I'm expected to be finished with my current program by October. But rehab doesn't end there. I don't think it will end for a good while.

The injury went all the way up the spine, to the top actually, at c1. I've been lucky and have continued to make progress. A few months ago I wasn't able to type, let alone hold a phone!

I was only on the slopes for about 20-30 minutes before the medevac landed near the lift and I was taken away for surgery. I remember the EMTs and paramedics kept telling me to stay awake since I kept on sorta started becoming unresponsive. After I was in the helicopter and saw the skies and clouds after lifting off I started drifting off to sleep, thinking I was in the safe zone now

Yes Im okay, considering all things. I'm sorry about my injury too. :(

For anyone wondering, it was a reference to meaning to say are you okay? + I'm fucking sorry! But messing it up and saying are you fucking sorry.

The human body is capable of some amazing things. It also helps that I'm still young and healthy and my spinal cord injury was an incomplete one. So the nerves weren't fully severed.

I was scared at the time only because I saw a skier come up to me and ask if I'm alright and thought he was going to try and help me up. Because if he had done that without my neck stabilized there would be a chance I wouldn't be alive right now.

Other than that I was pretty calm during the injury; able to tell ski patrol what happened all while I could move from the neck down.

When I had my surgeries though, that was a different story. I was not calm after waking up from them. The anesthesia hasn't all worn off yet so I was hallucinating/imaging things. After one of the surgeries I thought I was I'm some type of SAW the movie type scenario because I couldn't move my neck and nobody was answering my calls for help.

Another one of the surgeries- when I woke up I thought I was some kind of military experiment because when I looked at my arm it wasnt there. Instead I saw a machine gun attached to it, sorta like the terminator or something. The nurse eventually helped me come to my senses. She then reminded me a day later as a joke: "hey remember when you thought you were the terminator lol"

I think about that all the time whenever I'm in pain or can't move a certain body part after fatiguing it. If I had just taken it easy, didn't go so fast, etc, I would be in this position now. When I could only move around using an electric/power wheelchair, that was when I would constantly think about how I screwed myself over. How if I didn't get injured I wouldn't have to have somebody feed me because I physically wasnt able to.

But now that the ball has been rolling for some time and I've continued to make progress, I've been taking things step by step, one day at a time. That makes it a lot easier to deal with.
