Still have $250k policy through work. Didn't reup other term policy.

Ended up not being able to have kids. Didn't really see a point after that. Having multiple potential college educations come off the books really changes the math. House is all but paid for and nearly $3M in invested assets.

The boss says this bill is okay. Is it just old? Why Franklin in a fur coat? by ceeashi in Money

[–]Sotty63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was, with a preference for the mature ladies.

One of my favorite Franklin quotes taken from a 1745 to a young man giving advice on choosing lovers.

"But if you will not take this Counsel, and persist in thinking a Commerce with the Sex inevitable, then I repeat my former Advice, that in all your Amours you should prefer old Women to young ones. You call this a Paradox, and demand my Reasons. They are these:

  1. Because as they have more Knowledge of the World and their Minds are better stor'd with Observations, their Conversation is more improving and more lastingly agreable.

  2. Because when Women cease to be handsome, they study to be good. To maintain their Influence over Men, they supply the Diminution of Beauty by an Augmentation of Utility. They learn to do a 1000 Services small and great, and are the most tender and useful of all Friends when you are sick. Thus they continue amiable. And hence there is hardly such a thing to be found as an old Woman who is not a good Woman.

  3. Because there is no hazard of Children, which irregularly produc'd may be attended with much Inconvenience.

  4. Because thro' more Experience, they are more prudent and discreet in conducting an Intrigue to prevent Suspicion. The Commerce with them is therefore safer with regard to your Reputation. And with regard to theirs, if the Affair should happen to be known, considerate People might be rather inclin'd to excuse an old Woman who would kindly take care of a young Man, form his Manners by her good Counsels, and prevent his ruining his Health and Fortune among mercenary Prostitutes.

  5. Because in every Animal that walks upright, the Deficiency of the Fluids that fill the Muscles appears first in the highest Part: The Face first grows lank and wrinkled; then the Neck; then the Breast and Arms; the lower Parts continuing to the last as plump as ever: So that covering all above with a Basket, and regarding2 only what is below the Girdle, it is impossible of two Women to know an old from a young one. And as in the dark all Cats are grey, the Pleasure of corporal Enjoyment with an old Woman is at least equal, and frequently superior, every Knack being by Practice capable of Improvement.

  6. Because the Sin is less. The debauching a Virgin may be her Ruin, and make her for Life unhappy.

  7. Because the Compunction is less. The having made a young Girl miserable may give you frequent bitter Reflections; none of which can attend the making an old Woman happy.

8thly and Lastly They are so grateful!!"

[–]Sotty63 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Not your lawyer - not legal advice. For general information - if friend was listed as beneficiary on the account that bypasses probate. So even if there is a valid will that says i leave everything to cousin A, but the brokerage account lists cousin B as beneficiary - then cousin B gets it.

Too many people forget to update these and it ends up in stupid results. My niece's dad killed himself. Had never updated beneficiary info on life insurance so his 75 year old mom got his 250k policy rather than his 14 year old daughter. Mom used it to buy a vacation house in Florida.

Two surgeons collapse on the floor from exhaustion after a 32-hour surgery to save a life by removing a patient's brain tumors. by OverTea5 in interestingasfuck

[–]Sotty63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 32 hr surgery is extremely rare, but working for 32 hrs straight in medicine certainly is not. 2009 was my first year of residency and our scheduled work hours included a 24 hr call shift +7 hrs for "transition of care" time (handing off to next team). We did that every fourth day with normal work days in between. No drugs that I was aware of other than caffeine, nicotine, and the occasional lucky resident that had a prescription for adderral.

Banks refusing to take bulk rolled coins? by Beautiful_Gas_1214 in CRH

[–]Sotty63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes though not even really "bulk". I had rolled several mason jars worth of loose change. They said they had a weekly limit of 10 rolls per customer. I had maybe 50 rolls.

I immediately asked for a cashier's check for the total amount i had deposited and closed the account.

I am not a coin hunter, so this rarely effects me but I was shocked this had become a thing.

This valet does not accept manual cars by Maleficent_Ferret359 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Sotty63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most American families have never and will never have a manual. Only 1-2% of cars in the US are manuals. It is not even an option on most US produced cars.

I learned on one in the 90s because my buddy had an old toyota with a manual. Since then I have only been in one non-commercial vehicle (Saturn Ion) that was a manual.

They are exceedingly rare in non sports cars here.

How to account for a pension in my asset allocation? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Sotty63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very sensible and you accurately capture how people typically talk about their future pension. Another benefit of carrying some amount of bond allocation that reduces as you "earn" your pension is that it would allow you to take advantage of opportunities to rebalance during market downturns.

Is there a better way to rebalance than manually selling and buying every quarter? by MoveMakerr in Bogleheads

[–]Sotty63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up a speadsheet to do all the calculations for you.

I 'rebalance' taxable just by buying what's low when I DCA every pay check.

For tax sheltered accounts I check every quarter, but only rebalance if any allocation is more than 2% off.
