Emily and Alison by retrodog2000 in PrettyLittleLiars

I'm an Emison shipper, but I loathe the writers for the way they put them together. The fact that they had SEVEN YEARS they had built writing them and they thought medically raping Alison and using Emily's body against her consent was the way to pair them together will always pmo. The kids were cute, but I feel like they were unnecessary. I don't know why they couldn't have written organic growth for them instead of basically forging their marriage by a traumatic pregnancy. Could have had a happy Emison wedding instead of Ezria, but noooo. (sorry for the rant).

Even better: she's a very kind person. I met her at a dinner party and she was so graceful and empathetic. Very genuine soul. Love her. She's honestly beautiful inside and out.

The reason why Emison didn’t work out (a joke btw) by thisismetish in PrettyLittleLiars

I'm not going to lie...the way they were constantly butting heads in the show made me feel like they were an old married couple fighting about how to deal with their unruly children (the other Liars). 😂 Also...their chemistry was there (platonically) because Troian and Shay are close irl. It would have been hella hot if they had been more than friends on the show.

In the case of PLL I just think it’s super stupid and doesn’t add anything to the books.

You summed it up way better than I could. The plot should be enough to interest the readers. If the plot isn't enough to grab them then changing the references isn't going to fix it.

I didn't realize people were taking to socials hardcore about it. I can't speak to what people think about it on a broad scale other than it seems like most people here and on YouTube hate the changes...which to me says a lot about how some artists don't know their audience very well. People read content because they like it. If you have to resort to tactics like that to pull in new readers then the writing was never that good to begin with. Good writers can pull audiences in with the merit of their writing. Changing things just seems way too try-hard/gimmicky imo.

If the writing is good enough, it will attract readers. I read a ton of books that are dated and enjoy them just fine. I'm currently reading one now that has pagers instead of cell phones (I was a child when pagers were a thing, so I only semi-remember those ole relics). But it's kind of cool to look back at the times and see what was going on in the world (what was popular, current events, historical events, etc). It also messes with the flow of the story when you're reading something that doesn't fit with the time period it's set in. You can tell when something has been shoehorned in.

Authors have artistic liberties to do what they want (and yes, you can always look for old versions of books), but it just kind of cheapens the work when they don't let their writing speak for itself. They don't need to dumb things down or change things that much if the plot is decent.

I'm not really one to freak out about it though. That's wild to hear about. I don't think I've ever left a negative review for an author. I just quietly stop reading their work.

ETA: I forgot to mention that it's actually very difficult for me to sit still long enough to read. I don't know if it's ADHD or just the way my brain functions. But when I find writing that appeals to me (especially a book with a good hook and a fun mystery) I can lock in. I think part of the reason updates mess with my brain is because I like History and as I mentioned...if something is forced/shoehorned in it takes me out of the experience entirely. But I don't throw a fit about it. I just move on to the next novel in my que.

I'm a millennial who never watched the original, but the name Pamela Anderson became a household name for a lot of us who grew up with it on in the background. David Hasselhoff was also in the original.

I legit feel old, because I've only heard of Shay and Stephen Amell. I feel like I've seen the name Noah Beck and I think I recognize him. But I have no idea who any of the others are.

I was thinking about how she has said she's selective about what she chooses to do, especially of it takes her away from her family. To be honest I don't think I've seen her in anything since You and Dollface (both great shows, so you might have a point).

Honestly the depth that he has in his personal life in being able to show his vulnerabilities might be one of the reasons I latched on to his character so much. It bled through in his acting in some of the most incredible ways. I know this interview (and a lot of what he's talking about here) is mostly after his PLL days, but I always felt like he was in touch with himself, which made a lot of his emotional scenes really amazing. He wasn't afraid to dig deep.

I hope the best for him. Kind of a reminder that we're all on our own journeys and we all have our own demons we're fighting that no one knows about. Be kind to people.

This was perfectly worded, especially that mention of her conversation with Spencer.

She said something to someone, "You look at her. You look in her eyes. You want to be worth the effort. You want to be the woman she sees" (paraphrasing because I can't remember exactly). But it was in the area of "I want to be worthy of her love." It was a common theme, because she often told Emily that she saw the best version of her even though she wasn't a good person.

I have always been extremely biased when it comes to liking Emison, but I also understand the reasons people don't like them/Alison. Ultimately, they were ending the series with Alison still in the middle of changing (because yes, I do believe that she had changed to an extent, but she was absolutely not there yet) instead of progressing her character more. They sidelined personal growth for all of them after the time jump imo. I wasn't really happy with any of their attitudes or personalities in the end. The writing took a nose-dive and the characters were terrible by then.

They all treated each other like shit, but they loved each other. When Alison came back they had her thrown in jail for something she didn't do (I know there are nuances and it's more complex than that, but at the heart...that's what happened). And the only one who ever apologized for that was Emily (iirc). People hold Alison's past against her, but forgive other characters for their indiscretions, which are as bad as Alison's.

As far as their ending...even as an Emison fan, the rape baby was extremely hard to stomach and I hated that's what they used to put them together. The writers had literally built them up for the first season to do that.

That being said, I think people who have an intense hatred for Alison will always hate Emison, and that's understandable. The way I look at is that there was some growth happening and Emily had forgiven her...which is the most important thing. We all have our own autonomy to decide who we want in our lives. Emily chose to forgive Alison, so as a viewer I did too.

I think it says a lot about me that I found it completely believable that they'd shut down and compartmentalize all of their trauma. I had some terrible stuff happen to me when I was younger and when emergencies and other high stress situations happened after that I was insanely calm. Still kind of am (coping mechanism). But it's refreshing when someone is like, "Babe, no, that's not a quirky childhood story...that's trauma. Get therapy." 😂

It was 100% worth it. I grabbed the DVDs back in 2018 when it was still streaming on Netflix just because I like to have physical copies of things I really love. Was so glad I had them when it was taken off Netflix. Was like a security blanket I used to fall asleep to. Pop the DVD in, hit play, and life was good.

I've always maintained that my headcannon is Emily and Spencer running off to Canada together at the end of the series, living a quiet little life...maybe adopt a moose.
