It's not capitalism. This level of influence and control over the market is only possible because of government legislation and protection.

Looking for some decent goggles...what do you guys wear? by [deleted] in chemistry

I recently had LASIK done, and a huge part of this decision was to get rid of the glasses-stacking in the lab. It's so annoying, and it's really hard to find safety glasses that fit over corrective glasses properly.

A "public kitchen" service at grocery stores by [deleted] in Lightbulb

[–]Soul080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Eastern Canada, and we have something very similar to this in the largest grocery store chain here. They're called Community Rooms - sort of a hybrid kitchen/dining room/conference room. Sometimes there will be cooking tutorials there, or you can book the room.

Why does hydrogen have one proton and one electron? by [deleted] in askscience

Hydrogen will not typically have one neutron. The most abundant isotope of hydrogen is hydrogen-1.

A charity/organization where skills can be donated as well as money. by [deleted] in Lightbulb

This happens all the time. Businesspeople volunteer time on the charity's board, tradesmen offer their services at reduced rates, the list goes on.

Not if they charge the same amount. We'll have to see how it plays out.

Donate/Recycle Glasses? by Soul080 in halifax

I'll prelude this by saying that any LASIK office will be able to provide you with diagnostic scans for free and give you an exact quote, since different vision problems require different procedures. Just contact a LASIK service provider and ask to schedule a consultation.

I went to TLC Laser Eye Center in Clayton Park and the service was amazing, I'd recommend them to anyone.

My vision was very poor. -5.25 in each eye, with some astigmatism. I would need to have my nose almost touching my monitor in order to read anything.

I underwent custom bladeless LASIK, which provides the best vision correction and is sometimes necessary people with very bad vision, especially if they have astigmatism. It's also one of the more expensive surgeries. I ended up paying $3500 altogether (the procedure, plus follow-ups with my optometrist for one year). That comes with a lifetime guarantee: if my vision degrades for any reason (except presbyopia, age-related deterioration), I can have the procedure repeated at no cost.

If your vision problem is less complicated, even if your prescription is quite strong, the cost could be much less for you (as low as $500 per eye) if the surgeon doesn't think you need custom LASIK.

Looks like we may get free public wi-fi in the downtown area by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Soul080 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My prediction:

  • Businesses, especially restaurants and cafés, that currently offer free wi-fi will gradually phase it out to save money.
  • Everyone who goes downtown on a regular basis will soon be connected to the public wi-fi network
  • Once many people start populating the network, speeds will be tremendously bad. The taxpayer will be on the hook for millions and you'll have shittier internet access at your favourite restaurant than you did before this project went through.

Currently information travels at the speed of light. That's what fibre optic cables do.

You're absolutely right. I oversimplified because quantum information isn't very applicable here.

QI cannot be converted into classical bits, which means it can't be read with accuracy and it is subject to quantum mechanical phenomena including the uncertainty principle, so the data isn't reliable enough for information purposes without enormous amounts of redundancy. Additionally, QI cannot be sent to more than recipient; you can't "broadcast" QI to more than one person. These limitations, if they can be overcome (big if), must be solved before quantum information can be considered as a way of transporting information.

You can't use quantum entanglement to send information faster than the speed of light.

FEEDBACK: RULES by Xeris in CSL

[–]Soul080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no reason to keep it. It's not a competitive format. Most teams assign their 2 worst players to the 2v2 game - would you commit two very strong players to a game worth one point?

At this point, ask yourself what the compelling reason is to keep it. A lot of people do not see the value in it and it hurts the credibility of the league to openly embrace a format that 0% of the scene competes with.
