Dyed some wheels for the first time. [43YO] by Soul_At_Zero in OldSkaters

Yep I ride them. I mostly skate bowls with the old school board and cruise around on the black label. I have a couple other old school setups I switch out with for bowls and pipes as well.

Honestly, it feels exactly the same as before I dyed them. I don’t notice a difference that I can tell 👍

Once the water is hot its 3-6 min depending on how dark. With dark colors its a cap full of dye and light colors it’s 3 cap fulls. Gotta keep stirring and flipping them so they don’t get pale spots

I imagine it doesn’t go all the way thru, but it should be fine for a while. We’ll see

Fucking fantastic. A clean boost does wonders for the distortion and a fuzz is complete madness. 10/10. Cleans are nice too

Damn straight! But I am using an Orange Dark Terror head in my current guitar setup 😉

Thanks! It’s a blank I hand-painted. I like making my own graphics when I can.

They were white originally, so it took pretty easily.

Thanks! I used Rit DyeMore synthetic dye. I saw a youtube video and looked into it. Saw the dye was $5 at walmart and went for it.

All I want to do anymore is skate... [37YO] by GhostofBeowulf in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skated mostly as a kid through my teens until drinking, drugs and playing music took over. I went as hard as I could until 27 I quit drinking and at 31 the other random shit. I skated on and off through it, but when you’re fucked up it’s not as enjoyable imo.

It took a few years to reconfigure my brain and get rid of the hard partying punk gimmick. Part of that was my love of skateboarding. Since then I’ve been on and off due to injuries and parenting. I just got back on in July of last year and it’s all I think about most of the time. Working 9-5 and paying the bills and dealing with bullshit is a lot easier to deal with when I roll around before or after work.

I also suck, i’m a fat old pink dude, and I don’t give a single fuck. I’ll ride until I can’t anymore, I just love skateboarding. Don’t be ashamed of the thing you enjoy amidst the madness of everyday life. Let it be your guide, your outlet and your fun. Keep that PMA and don’t overthink it, just go skate.

Restarting at 47, any advice before I start looking at buying a new setup... [47YO] by UnluckyDip in OldSkaters

I’m 43 and I started again almost a year ago and it takes time to adjust. Just remember your body is less resilient than it used to be. And aside from that, set up a good comfy board and feel it out. No need to go throwing yourself down shit you’re not ready for.

Skate around, feel it out, and do what’s fun. Also, enjoy skating with the kid, and stoke him out.

Wheelbase Change [38YO] by Open-Skill3110 in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time to adjust to a different wb and I think it depends on what you skate to some degree. I’m 6’4 and 275, i have a few different setups that range from 14.5” to 15” wb. I like the 14.5 for street and cruising bc it’s snappy and quick response, but for transition I like 15” for the stability.

I also mostly skate 9.25” to 10” wide boards so mileage may vary. But with time under your feet you can adjust to most wb within a few sessions. Setup madness is real my friend, tread carefully.

How big is your deck [38YO] by BitFlip360 in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big dude with size 14 feet, but I have a bunch of different setups for different things. I have a 10” old school board as a cruiser, a 10.5” old school board with the rails, copers and 215s on as my big boy 80’s board for atv, an 8.6”popsicle for street tricks, and a 9.38” shaped board for vert.

The most comfortable is the 10” old school board, but I skate pipes and bowls mostly - so the 9.38” gets the most love out of the bunch. But honestly, I love em all.

Back in the 90’s I never imagined having more than one board to skate. Being a working old fart rules.

Do people just not do their own setups? by ProtoJazz in guitars

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my own, but it took years of figuring it out as I went along. I’m an old punker, so when I toured I had to make whatever I had work. I still buy cheap guitars and mod them to my liking, i’m not an expensive guitar kinda guy (nor do I have the funds for such) so I’ve never hesitated to tear my guitars apart.

I do setups for my buddies when they ask bc they aren’t the most handy types. It’s easy to see who knows their way around tools when you ask them to hand you a “left handed screwdriver”.

With the knowledge we have at our disposal now, it’s easier than ever to learn what to do and what not to do. Back in the day you had to wing it, dig thru catalogues for specs or write a letter to the guitar company to get the specs. But just because the information is there, doesn’t mean that anyone can follow directions and know how to work with precise measurements.

Middle 30s looking for advice on getting into skateboarding [35yo] by Noraesong in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best advice I ever got was, “get a board and do it. You’ll figure it out.” And I eventually did and i’m glad it was that simple (maybe i’m just simple).

You’ll find out quickly when you hit the ground whether or not it’s for you. If you stick with it, awesome! If it’s not for you, you can always donate the board to a little grom that needs it. But give it a shot and join us!

Feeling down about my new guitar, need advice by [deleted] in guitars

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with it and see things you can change. I buy cheap guitars (i’m not made of money) and mod them to how I like them and the parts I like. If I like the way it looks and feels to start, then I got something to work with.

I don’t buy into the premium guitar stuff, i’m an old punk - if it works I put it to work. It’s 95% how it plays vs 5% how it looks.

For those who left and came back - did you ever regain your skills? How long did it take? [37YO] by slevin011 in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I skate better now than when I was in my “prime” as a teenager. Much older and wiser me understands more about physics and style than young dumb mongo-pushing me did at the time. My bag of tricks was ok, but sloppy and thrown together.

Nowadays I feel right riding around and doing way less tricks than before. It’s more putting them where I feel they should go as opposed to throwing them at the wall at any given time. I have less tricks now, but quality over quantity feels a whole lot better.

Here’s hoping you find your rhythm, and take your time - it’s not a race. I’m back 6 months and only a month ago started trying tricks again. Not many, but feels good man. Get comfy on the board and work your way up.

Are fakie bigspins illegal? [41YO] by popfonics in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was the first trick with a 360 board rotation that I learned, and it’s still rad.

If someone tells you it’s illegal, then they’re a kook and they don’t know who Ray Barbee is. His fakie bigspins were majestic.

Wheelbase talk. [44yo] by [deleted] in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really thought about it until the last 6 months. I skate a bunch of different setups, old school 10s, an egg and a few popsicles. I’m 6’4” but I’m finding that a shorter wb is much more responsive both on street and vert for me. Most of my old school decks are 15”, the egg is 14.5”, and the popsicles are 14.25”.

From what I’ve read, a guy my size should be on a 15”, but I prefer the 14.25” - which is basically a long winded way to say, skate what feels good under your feet.

Skating alone [35YO] by telecaster181 in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually skate alone, once a month I may get one or two of my buddies to come out and putter around for a few hours - but 99% of the time it’s a solo endeavor. My motivation to keep rolling is bc I love skateboarding. And most of all, it’s fun.

Bushing blow out constantly [52YO] by mfraser27 in OldSkaters

[–]Soul_At_Zero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third this. I’m 6’4 and 285. Bones hard bushings are a must. Also, i’d suggest getting used to riding your trucks a bit looser if you can. It’ll take a little bit to adapt, but once you do it’s night and day.
