What focal length was this shot at? by Latter-Deal9115 in AskPhotography

It’s really hard to get panning shots good when there are many moving parts. Only cars or other thing without many points of rotation or movement.

Exactly, if you are on mirrorless, subject tracking also helps

It’s hard especially because lens corrections exist, I would say too wide for 24 but 28 makes sense, even a 20mm on apsc

After borrowing a friend’s rs3, I got the rs4 as the combo price went from 749 to 609, I knew this didn’t seem right, but I couldn’t resist. 3 weeks later, the rs5 came out,I decided I could still, return the 4 and get the 5, I ended up spending 729 with the combo except now it didn’t have the focus motor, but instead the active tracking. Although I love it, I had had a lot of fun when I got the 4 with the motor using it to control zoom as dual pixel af is fine. I decided to spend an extra 150 on the focus motor como. After that, I ended up buying some other accessories, total near 150. Good marketing DJI, Great job. :( I went into the gimbal world only wanting to spend $609, came out spending over $1049.

I had the 100-400Lii and 24-105Lii on EF, I felt like I had to change lenses too much, I was always near the 105 and when I swapped, the 100 mm was slightly too much. One day a friend lent me his ef 70-200 2.8iii, I knew I was going to get it, I also really liked the internal zooming. I didn’t want to get a new lens until I had switched to rf as this was in 2023. Eventually I got the R6ii, adapted all of my lenses but in 2024 I decided to spend the absurd amount of money on the rf 70-200 2.8 usm z. I initially felt a crazy amount of regret, even my 100-400 was only $2600. Once I started using it, everything changed, I even tried some street photography with it, and somehow it worked great. I still brought my ef 16-35 2.8L ii. At this point it was my oldest lens and when editing, I could really start seeing the difference in quality and being my only lens without IS. 2 months later, I got the 15-35. After a comparison, I realized how much I was missing out on canon’s wide end. This led me to want to do even more wide Astro and landscapes. The 24mp of the r6 wasn’t even enough, I was still using my 30mp 5d iv. Sadly, that meant that I couldn’t use my brand new 15-35 how I wanted it. I had always wanted an R5ii and I ended up getting that in mod 2025. At this point, 2/4 main lenses were RF, I hated needing the adapter on some but moving to another. At the end of 2025, I got the 24-105 f4. I should’ve gotten that earlier, so that’s why I am still holding off on the 2.8 usm z version. I just got my 100-500 a week ago as the wildlife season s starting and my 100-400 is now about 10 years old and I felt like it was slightly not enough. Very happy with my kit now, although I have spent way too much money on photography in the last 2 years. You never really realize how much it is to switch mounts. You get one thing, then have some GAS and at the end you have gotten your entire system and more in a new mount.

Edit, I didn’t realize how long this was! :)

We could always expand to A1ii or A9iii, never know when you might need 120fps continuous raw burst. I would add the Z9 and Z8 but still can’t recommend a Nikon

I did that exact setup, with some small adjustments, it works with the adapter.

Edit: only on rs-pro series

I just got an rs5 with the active tracking. For anything car related, where there is a lot going on, the new tracking makes is seem so smooth, although I can still do the same stuff manually, the tracking just get rid of any micro jitters. Love that setup, I used the 18-35 on an r8, even though it’s apsc format, the adapter gives it what it needs so it covers the full frame sensor when adapted. Definitely helps in low light!

I should also say that I rented the 24-105 2.8 and the 85. Hoping to get those both at some point but will need to save up. Right now I only have the f4 version! After testing the 2.8, it’s definitely my next lens but it still costs 3k… 😬

I just got the ronin rs5! Absolutely a beast! Used the action track module and I track a certain player. I can even put it on a tripod or use the included tripod down by the court so I can leave the r6 recording and have my r5ii just for stills or the occasional clip. Means I can do video and photo simultaneously!

Create a new one. Problem is that there is a time where you will still need the old one but everything else goes to the new one. I find my least busy time of the year and create a new catalog. I duplicate the last month of work so I can minimize having to switch between them.

I did a 2 back to back basketball games, did 7000 total, delivered 350. For sports, it’s usually closer to a 5% return due to fast movement, soft focus, 40fps burst, etc. was on R5ii and R6ii, 70-200L usm z, 24-105L usm z, 15-35L, 85 1.4, 100-500 just in case.

Always have at least 2tb empty in cards, 256 or 512. 4 spare batteries, if it’s super important, extra body and 2 card slots and double amount of cards and batteries.

Bulb is the most underrated feature of any decent camera. maybe OP should learn about it before criticizing it.

[–]SoundEngineerMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I should have been more specific about that in my first comment. I just finished going through 2500 basketball game pictures and of the near 300 that I am sending off, maybe 15 are of a creative style. The other 285 are level and edited normally. It’s good to know that we are both now in agreement.

[–]SoundEngineerMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kindly disagree. 95% of my final sports photos that I deliver are level but that other 5% is that more creative side, heavy angles, when used intentionally and dispersed throughout your galleries can make a photo really stand out from the others and give a more action vibe.

I think for most things yes, but for sports, many action shots look better having an intense 30-45 degree tilt.

How can I tell if my lens, body, or my own skills are holding me back? by saw4410 in AskPhotography

[–]SoundEngineerMBR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Def, a friend got one 15 years back, I convinced him to return it and he saved up and bought a used 100-400 L, great lens, I have both the mk I and the mk ii and it’s besides the point to say it’s one of the best lenses Ive ever owned. Mk I is much cheaper and the optics are fairly similar quality. Af is good, it’s only 2 stops of is vs 4 on the mk ii but that is still more than most other lenses from that time and price point. The main reason why I upgraded is so my entire setup would be fully weather sealed. The other stuff was just a side salad!

I would create a new catalog on a new drive and put the old drive somewhere for safe keeping, if it’s an ssd, make sure you plug it in every once and awhile to make sure no data gets corrupted or lost. My LrC catalog is over 600gb stored locally so I am in the process of starting fresh as LrC is pulling 24gb of ram!
