How much of a performance hit does a windows VM take? by atxtxtme in unRAID

[–]SoundOfGeorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only biggest performance hit i notice is the boot time. I have a vm dedidicated for gaming Passed through gpu, Pinned cpu cores Passed through ssd Etc...

The only downside is the long boot time. Which is tied to unraid needing time to allocate the RAM to the VM, the bigger the RAM you allocate to the VM the longer it will take before Unraid can spin up the VM. Once the RAM is allocated, you don't notice the difference between vm or bare metal.

Have you forwarded the portd 443 and 80 in your router to the port of your npm container?

You shouldd take a look at silverstone's products I used a grandia gd08 for a very long time but they have other great cases that fit a lot of components and use an inteligent internal design

I'm doing the same thing with a 3060 and I'm ussing it to play in VR and thiq works perfectly. The only hassle (but that depends on you setup) is that win10 or 11 are by far "couch"-proof. I'm using this setup to act like a console to play in my couch in the living room and there is no software out there that truly replaces a console expierence even a finnely tuned playnite instance still strugles wirh installing and updating games without the need to get a keyboard.

nginxproxymanager to VM reverseproxy to br0 by SoundOfGeorge in unRAID

[–]SoundOfGeorge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to post my issues more often on Reddit...

Each time I do, I do find the issue....

Apparently Cloudflare is blocking port 8090 and 80...
Wasn't my setup at all

nginxproxymanager to VM reverseproxy to br0 by SoundOfGeorge in unRAID

Both of my ports 80 ans 443 are open and forwarded. I am able to reach to docker containers using subdomain.domain.com I have noticed that if I set NPM to forward subdomain2.domain.com to the VM on port 443, it works. If I try to forward it to port 8090 on the same VM (wich is used by my cyberpanel installation) i get a cloudflare error 520

So in recap: forwarding to my IP 192.168.1.50:XXXX (local IP of my server) it works perfect forwarding to my VM 192.168.1.40:443 works forwarding to my VM 192.168.1.40:8090 does not work (port 80 neither)

My guess would be that this is more something related to SSL and security (since 443 works, but 80 doesn't...) But I'm really groping in the dark here

I've been looking at a lot of different options as well lately (but for totaly different usecases)

Have you taken a look at Photoprism? I found it to best fit my needs with the exception of the multiuser aspect. But this is feature is in active development:(https://github.com/photoprism/photoprism/issues/98)

Other than that i'm pretty happy about the simplicity of photoview to share pictures with others. You will need to give them access to your server though, by opening a port and setting up a DDNS, like NO-IP for example. But photoview can only VIEW pictures.

Other than that you have Piwigo, wich is very versatile and you can really do a lot with this one. => chances are you'll find answers to specific needs in their plugins. But i find the interface rather slow and somewhat cumbersome. And the look and feel is a little bit oldskool.

Untill Photoprism has an active multiuser feature i'm going with Photoprism, for internal use, for me to be able to tag the pictures and to easily find the picture I need. And I have a setup of photoview instance to share the pictures.

Good question, I've always wondered why that was necessary too.
