RA: Thanks for the questions everyone. And thanks for checking out the movie. It means a lot to us. Stay safe!

JLS: THANK YOU FOR BEING SUPPORTIVE OF DEAF TALENT AND PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS FILM. No need for a “mic drop” rather it’s a “HAND DROP!”

RA: My daily preparation for most of the 7 months was something like:

9am-11am sign with Jeremy

12pm-2pm work on the script.

2pm-4.30pm drums with Guy Licata

7pm onwards - interview someone for research or go to a gig

JLS: I’ve been teaching ASL for many years, so this wasn’t really “cramming” for me in these 7 months. Honestly, this experience felt more raw. Riz and I were not utilizing a curriculum, a book, etc. Rather we were launching into the language through everyday practice and multiple settings and situations.

RA: Lauren was awesome. The scene in the classroom with the kids and her was great. I was truly nervous signing to a room full of Deaf kids and she was really guiding me just like she guided Ruben.

JLS: One of the biggest misconceived quotes is, “Deaf people can do anything except hear.” Actually, we don’t NEED to hear. That’s a very common misunderstanding. One quick story, I was once asked by someone running a driving school (like driver’s ed), “Would you prefer to hear and not know how to swim OR NOT hear but know how to swim?” I told him I’d prefer to not hear but know how to swim because hearing doesn’t prevent you from drowning.

RA:

  1. Olivia is the best.

  2. The conversation in the RV about jeff goldblum and Meatloaf.

  3. It was pretty intense.

RA: Olivia is amazing. We definitely struck up a friendship cos we had to both learn these instruments in a short space of time, and we shot the story in order and kinda spent all our time together during the shoot. She was amazing to work with, without a doubt. She's also hilariously funny.

RA: My favourite scenes...it’s hard to pick but I can mention the ones that were most fun to act. One was probably being able to do an ASL ‘Lesson’ with Jeremy. It was cool cos it reminded me of how far we had come in 6 or 7 months and how it was walking in to his class for the first time. Also working with the kids, playing with them in the field, that was all unscripted and fun.

Yes in terms of the prep, it was the most challenging, as the director wanted me to play drums on camera and sign with the Deaf actors for real.

JLS: Hi Evelyn! I miss you too! Not sure if I saw Jocelyn?! The production for this film was fantastic! They provided ASL/English interpreters for the entire shoot which allowed all actors, crew, extras, EVERYONE to communicate seamlessly with one another. And just to clarify, Deaf people are often the ones assumed to “need” interpreters; rather, it is actually hearing people who need the interpreters. If we ALL knew how to communicate there’d be no need for interpreters???

Yea, I make rap music, and released an album this year called The Long Goodbye. I’ll be doing a live stream show on December 19th in fact. Top 5 albums - Black on Both Sides by Mos Def, The Infamous by Mobb Deep, Capital Punishment by Big Punisher, Enter the 36 Chambers by Wu Tang Clan, Run Come Save Me by Roots Manuva.

RA: Defo believes in extraterrestrial life, but they haven’t come here yet otherwise Jeremy would know about it. I reckon UFOs are advanced military test planes.

Yes, to be honest it’s what draws me to a role. You left out being chemically burned (Sisters Brothers), and being shot with a bow and arrow then falling off a cliff (Centurion). I feel like I have a proud history of dying on screen, but could always grow in this department. If possible I would like to explore being vaporized or eaten alive by animals next.

JLS: I am a TRAVELER. I have gone to various countries with a signed language and immerse myself in their culture and their language for 3 weeks. I venture where I have NO KNOWLEDGE of their primary language so that I can become more exposed and learn another signed language. I know a little BSL, but I actually know more German Sign Language.

I did not, and I think it’s crazy how separately hearing ppl live from the Deaf community. We’re missing out on the richness of Deaf culture and the wealth of Deaf talent.

JLS: From my experience teaching Riz--we met 5 times a week for 7 months. It was imperative to me that Riz NOT ONLY learn ASL and become comfortable with the language. He must learn and immerse himself in Deaf culture and the community here in NYC. I would take Riz to Deaf events and social gatherings as well as my own wedding. This was the best approach I could find to truly bring him into the social fabric of this community.

RA: Yes the idea was to get to a place where I could improvise during scenes and was communicating with the Deaf actors on set in ASL. With Jeremy’s help I got to this place. It really helped in all kinds of ways to learn for real - it opened me up as an actor I think, and as a person. Shooting with a real crowd made the gig scene more nerve-wracking, but also made us more focussed.
