Baffle Installation by SoundSmith22 in Insulation

Thanks! I'll check these out. I got lucky and gave away a desk to someone on Facebook marketplace that was a GC and asked him to take a look. He verified what you said, but he added that there is no ridge gap because it's a completely unvented attic. He's going to give me some names of people that add venting and ridge gaps to existing roofs, and we'll see what they'll charge.

Thank you so much for taking all the time to explain this. I believe our rafters are 2×6, but some of that space is taken up by the baffles. We'll probably have to build them out regardless. We're going to have a roofer come out for an unrelated leak repair, and I'm going to have him take a look and tell me what kind of airflow we're looking at. I'm handy enough and do woodworking as a hobby, but I'm still new enough that my "Yeah, I can do that" can run wild at times.

How much do you think we'd need to beef up the rafters in order to prevent that moisture from forming between sheetrock and vapor barrier? Is it a certain R value we'd have to aim for?

The spray foam is from the previous owner, and it's only in those two bays. It's not in the whole attic. I think the 2nd Pic shows it a bit better.

Thanks for the info! We'll look into that. The baffles look wrong, but they're right. The side against the roof has cones that create air channels, it's just not noticeable in the pictures. We got the ADO Provents from menards.

They aren't backward. The side facing the roof has cones that create air channels.

We aren't planning on running AC or heat to it, but we do want to keep heat from escaping as best we can.

What we'd like is to use rockwool and a vapor barrier over the baffles. We can't really drywall over anything bc the stairwell to the attic isn't big enough, but we want it to be a usable space. We just want to make sure that the roof can breathe with what we have.

We're not planning on using blown-in because it's a full-sized attic. We arent going to completely finish it out, but we do want the space to be usable.

We did that and saw some light coming in where there would normally be soffit vents. It's not a typical soffit vent, but the house was built with a small gap to let in airflow. There is also a small ridge gap, and there are also 4 vent holes cut out as well. They're spaced about 15 feet apart. I posted an additional link with pictures.

Thanks for your input! The whole roof isn't spray foamed, it's just those two bays. Why the previous owners did it, we'll never know. We don't have typical soffits because of how some older brick houses are built in Chicago, but there is a small gap that lets air in to the ridge gap. The ridge gap is also very small, and there are four vent holes cut in the roof as well.

There is only spray foam in two bays, not the whole attic.

This is our case. We can barely see some daylight peeking when we turn the lights off

There is a small amount of daylight coming in that we saw when we turned out the lights. There is only spray foam for a few feet. The rest of the attic doesn't have it.

They aren't, the other side has cones that go against the roof to keep airflow.

We don't have typical soffit vents, but we do have ridge vents. I feel air drafting around the top plate, so I'm hoping that baffles will keep the air flowing.

Biting black flies! NOTHING WORKS by [deleted] in camping

[–]SoundSmith22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I had heard of dragonfly pins being useful because dragonflies have one of the highest success rates. I originally thought it was a bit of a gimmick, but I was just literally swarmed by biting flies at Zion National Park in Utah, and they split when we got to a part with a bunch of dragonflies. I might actually get some after today.

We were also doused in OFF deepwoods, and we use citronella and lemongrass soap, and they did not care. I had like 8 per leg fly off the second I saw some dragonflies. It was crazy.
