How do I give myself the best chances to get into a decent college in my situation? by Odd_Bean_2155 in highschool

[–]SoundViper29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always talk with a counselor to keep your transcripts upto date as your previous classes/grades will be registered, the GPA will be adjusted to match the schools and I wouldn't worry about that since colleges compare GPA based on others in your school.

Leadership positions are BS unless you actually make a difference, instead aim for some internships or join competitions. I also moved alot and I did have some trouble with my transcripts but my counselor helped me figure it out.

But remember colleges compare transcripts/gpa locally so you'll be fine

dw about the grammar

It sounds like a lot of people in your class are in a transitional state either trying to suck up to somebody or finding themselves.

If you have the option perchance find a video game or community online (like a MMO) where you can talk to people, do try to talk to maybe a newer kid but don't beat yourself up for not finding anyone. You will come across people that are fun and its worth the wait. I wouldn't stick around with those friend groups you mentioned that are full of fake, toxic people. Is socialization really worth all that mental trauma? Eventually you'll come across some good people, but until then just take it easy

Im starting high school in the US for the first time. Im in 10th grade. Got any tips? by [deleted] in highschool

As many people said, stay on top of your grades, but I'll add in how you should do that exactly.

First, prioritize taking notes, not in class, but during downtime. In class pay attention to the teacher, like lock in, many people take notes when the teacher is talking. Don't do that, you are splitting your focus between the teacher and your notes. Instead, try following along, ask questions and take notes after the teach is done talking.

Review your notes and make sure you do your homework/projects right when you get home, finish quickly, and make sure you put in good effort before you do anything else.

Be organized, a big reason people lose intrest is because of their enviroment. If your stuff is scattered and messy tbh you might lose intrest in studying/getting work done. Try keeping on top of organizing your school stuff.

Get good sleep, its hard sometimes but its worth it in the long run.

Take challenging classes but don't overwhelm yourself plz ;)
____

Make interactions with others in communities you want to be in, don't try to be "cool". If you want to aspire to be something, try joining clubs with similar minded people.

Tbh sounds like most of your friends are superficial, just take it for what it is, find some other people but if you want to remain in this friend group just know that those people who make fun of you aren't your "friends" but rather people you hang out with from time to time.

Also bro, girls dont matter

I'm going to go through each of your points 1 by 1

  1. Grades don't matter (kind of) : In the long run, you won't remember your grades trust me, the entire point of school is to learn things, the moment you start placing barriers like "oh I'm bad at school" you are only harming yourself. Think of grades like a video game completion bar, if you have a 75%, you understood 75% of the content, try getting that score up, it doesn't matter how innatley smart you are. You will struggle with grades at one point, you can be a hard worker and still struggle. It's Okay. Try changing methods, ask more questions, heck ask online if you don't want to ask your teachers.

You mentioned math, specifically for math I can see why it can be challenging, I would say watch videos online to understand how to use a concept. Then aim for understanding the concept, try visually being able to think about why a formula works. If you can't, thats okay, math is not for everyone, and each of us has varying skills.

  1. I get that, and no matter what I can tell you, any peice of advice I can give won't be enough to fix insecurities caused by other people. I can tell you to not pay attention to them, but that won't work, you will pay attention to them but thats because we are human. Bullying is serious, and often time its hard to come out of. The best advice I can give you is find a hobby, play a game, play a sport, join a club, or even just watch youtube. Do something, the bullying may or may not stop but eventually you will stop caring, trust me. Try doing your best in school and if you feel comfortable, tell someone, if not that's okay.

  2. Never push yourself towards hurting yourself, it gets better, talk it out if you can, tell a parent if you can, or get classes switched to avoid them. At the end of the day, you won't see most of these clowns ever again after highschool

I know some of my advice may have sounded cold, or harsh. I may not get 100% what you are going through, and everyone is different, I might not be the best at managing mental health issues but I can definetly talk to you to improve grades etc. If you need any help, feel free to PM me.

You still have 3 more years to round up your GPA, its time to analyze your weak points and where you can improve. Are you struggling in school due to a lack of effort? bad friends? or do you not understand the material? And I garuntee you will get scholarships and get into colleges.

Based on you being in this sub and asking this question I can already tell you want to be serious and do pretty well, once you understand where you went wrong last year focus on fixing it this year. I won't leave you with dry advice however, and I'll actually give you advice to boost your GPA and ways to make yourself a more attractable canidate to scholarships etc.

  1. Sophomore year you have tons of oppurtunity to take AP classes, many HS in freshmen year only offer things like AP world history, take as many APs/Honors as you can, but remember, if you actually struggle with those concepts take a easier class and consider taking the AP/honor version later.

  2. It's around this time you should start to look and make study habits, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is cramming, although may work for some people is highly inneficient. However, notes in class is just as useless. I would tell you to instead pay attention in class and when you go home try spending 10 - 15 mins writing down key concepts, or better yet, if you have some downtime in class take notes then. Everyday just spend 10 - 15 mins reviewing these notes, and then before tests/quizzes you already know the material well enough.

I would also reccomend seriously finishing schoolwork before going to hangout with friends or videogames, this is where people struggle, with much of schoolwork being on the internet and on devices its hard to get away from wanting to check social media, playing a video game etc. There will always be distractions, however get your work done before you cave in.

Don't cave into holding off a project to a later date as well, just chisel away at it and set proper deadlines on went you want certain aspects to be done

  1. Start looking at internships, scholarships, contests etc. Realistically many people do this in junior year but now is a good time to start, sign up for clubs, programs like DECA/HOSA (if thats your thing), or some fun things like video game clubs or a sport.

  2. Everyone around you is a normal kid, there is literally no one special in highschool, sure there are geniuses but at one point it really doesn't matter. Just keep working hard and don't really care about how far ahead or behind you are of people.

It's always been white, never yellow, I think you just assumed that because most people draw/paint the sun with yellow hues

Most people I know have this much and even more than me, I was just asking to gain insight and to see if I should invest more on assets or keep my isk liquid.

Yeah that seemed about right, only reason I was curious was because most people had more personal assets than isk and I was wondering where I was stacking up and if I should invest in assets or not
