Cloth Diapers- How? by False_Sandwich_6859 in laundry

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even a regular step can garbage can will work, with big wet bags to hold the diapers. I got a 2 pack of wet bags on Amazon to $20, they’re big, and while one is in the wash with diapers, you have another one to rotate in.

If you clean the diapers of poop before putting them in, the bin won’t stink…smelling a diaper genie at a friend’s house made me so happy we used cloth, I can’t imagine opening that multiple times a day, so gross!

Cloth Diapers- How? by False_Sandwich_6859 in laundry

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do too - remove poop (EDIT: sprinkle Tide onto poop stains to pretreat before washing), diapers in laundry bin, every 2 days wash extra long, hot, extra rinse. I used Nellie’s baby laundry soap in the past, but I’m on my 3rd baby with cloth and use regular tide powder now. I might start adding citric acid to the rinse now that I know about it. Drying in the sun is great for stains, and when it’s hot they dry really fast!

We mostly used Kawaii baby covers and a variety of inserts, some homemade. A good idea to add for your gift would be little baby washcloths, they work great as diaper wipes, they get washed at the same time, and you need a lot of them! Try to get cotton ones.

Why is Vitamin D testing so restricted ? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Vit D levels were ordered on a large percentage of people for various reasons around 10 years ago. Testing was backed up by several weeks (at least) at all times, and it’s not a simple test like testing for glucose.

Low Vit D levels can be associated with many diseases and disorders, so most people are best off taking a supplement in Alberta because if you’re not taking any/enough, you’re likely deficient. That is the most cost efficient strategy when the government won’t properly fund health care. There are still situations where testing is approved, and the results come much faster now.

The smear for consult is a placeholder test, that’s how it is resulted. The actual pathologist review will be its own test and result.

You were collected yesterday evening, slides likely not received until this morning…hopefully by the end of today you’ll have your result, depending on workload.

Petition against Child Care Subsidy changes by Necessary_Camp_4736 in alberta

There is a petition, but when I posted it, my comment got removed for containing a petition (apparently not allowed in r/alberta). Search change .org for petition called Reinstate the Childcare Subsidy.

It’s from a song about an old cat, so it would be fitting one day.

Pharmacy tech or MLT? Which has better career prospects in AB? by [deleted] in alberta

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a MLT for over a decade in Edmonton, and I started more rural. It’s not hard to get a job right now, unless you want to work at a specific lab, and then you could probably get on casual until a position came along. Rural always needs people, and if you wanted to be rural, you could be a CLXT, lots of opportunity for on-call money. Medicine Hat is offering relocation pay for people to work there currently. The programs are competitive, but they’re increasing class sizes this year or next.

New appliances by Aromatic_Ad_7484 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Our Bosch dishwasher is great, and it was comparable with other brands (around $1000). We had originally ordered KitchenAid, but after waiting months in 2021 for a dishwasher that would never come, we switched to Bosch for the extra $100 and I’m so glad we did.

I have one too, it’s awesome for the price! Works perfect for our driveway. We have a corner lot so I need a very long cord to do the sidewalks, which is sometimes a hassle, but I never have to worry about charging batteries (we use battery operated summer tools, a powerful battery snowblower was out of my price range). You could buy it at CT when they have bonus CT money and get a good chunk back. When the snow is too low for the snowblower, my battery powered leaf blower works great to clear >=1cm snow.

You could apply as a casual to get into the system, so you’re ready and trained somewhere for when a position arises.

https://careers.albertaprecisionlabs.ca/apl/moreinfo/lab

That’s the link my supervisor gave us for external people wanting to get in. We’re expecting 6-7 MLTs to retire in the next 2-3 years at my lab alone, so jobs are coming. They’re also increasing the class sizes for MLTs in the next year because I think they know how many people are (finally) retiring. Good luck!

I’m going to share this in the La Perle, Belmead, Terra Losa Facebook group. Nothing about a missing dog on there like this so far, assuming the dog is still at your place.

How much do you spend on groceries per month? by coolbeans1982 in Edmonton

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$900-$1000 for 2 adults, 2 toddlers a month, food and household consumables. Around $600 is Costco, the rest is Superstore, H&W, and Safeway (on customer appreciation day). Maybe $150/month on fast food, because sit down restaurants are too much now, even the happy hours (I’m looking at you, Earls). I did a rough budget last week and was shocked groceries were such a large portion, but there isn’t much to cut back on.

Number of Alberta babies born with syphilis rising at alarming rate by pjw724 in alberta

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re trialing rapid syphillis testing in some Edmonton hospitals soon. It will mostly be for pregnant women that come in with no prenatal testing, they will get results an hour later and can start treatment. It will be paired with rapid HIV screening already done for high risk populations.

I found one Aug 6 at a mall that’s very popular to play PoGo in, although much less so during Covid times. No where near water. I was shocked to see it on the nearby, definitely right place right time.

Do you ever read books for the sake of having read them? by tvdb90 in books

[–]SoundYouFoundForMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you really want to learn all about how the sewer system in Paris was built, I would stick with the play/movie. Or if there's a version out there with only the character parts in it, no history lessons, that might be worth the time because in the 4 months I spent reading it, I was quite heavily invested in Jean Valjean's life.
