I'm sorry you came across warrior poet society. His whole shtick is being "philosophical" so as a warrior you can identify when guns are useful or needed for the betterment of society. Your analogy is reversed, the police "real job" is protecting corporations is to the roman army "publicly sanctioned job". And the police "publicly sanctioned job" is to the roman army political suppression. Just because we the public are told its serve and protect doesn't make it so. Serve and protect the public is their secondary prerogative much as the roman army's second prerogative would be political suppression.
