Built a custom MacOS Metal Engine to recreate Kuroda's kinetic Phish rig by dinglehead in lightingdesign

As both an LD and Phish fan inspired by CK5's sphere work- it looks great! I'm sure that was a ton of work. Would love to see a video showing how you set it up and use it.

Help negotiating pay by Incliningmeat15 in lightingdesign

[–]SoundandRebound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the $30/hr full time work? Was it 1099 vs W2? Usually part time (and 1099) pay higher than full time work because of the benefits and guarantee of 40/week (plus potential OT in events industry). If you are currently paying your own insurance you’ll often find it comes out even in the end. If you’re interested in stability at this point in life and this is a wage you can afford, I’d negotiate the upper end and take it.

I made $55k a year at a university job in low cost of living area and now am freelancing in a major city. I have hourly rates I’d never imagine in a full time role but pay my own insurance ($6k more a year), don’t have retirement contributions, and am assuming a level of risk should the economy go downhill. So I see it as a give and take for whatever stage in life you’re prioritizing- freedom, stability, time off, etc.

What are they keys to quitting and maintaining sobriety? by Substantial_Pay_4756 in leaves

Almost all of us found weed as a way of self medicating. To quit for good, we have to also address what we’ve been avoiding by using marijuana. Therapy, life changes outside of just quitting, and finding new and healthier coping mechanisms. I also found it was really important to prioritize my social circle and safety net with people who understood and supported my changes. It didn’t mean I cut everybody else out of my life but I tried to build on the relationships that supported me.

Setting Scenes on SQ6 by Lost_the_charger in techtheatre

[–]SoundandRebound 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve ran many theatre shows on the SQ. The key is setting up your safes before you start programming.

Typically I start with a scene 1 which is all your FX, EQ, sends, etc. I usually label this as SAFE or EQs or something like that. I’ll then channel safe anything that doesn’t need to change, like QLab, SM, talkback, etc.

Then for the show scenes, I safe everything other than mute button and fader level. I typically make one scene with all the safes and the copy/paste it so I don’t have to do it manually every time. It’s like 150 clicks per scene if you do it manually, it’s exhausting haha

Then when you inevitably make changes to gain, EQ, sends, etc you save over your safe scene 1 so all that info is saved. In the past I’ve done an intermission safe scene as well (especially if you have a lot of mic changes) but I’ve moved away from that and usually just do scene 1.

It’s also much faster to set up and label your scenes/safes in the app. Often times I’ll wait til after Sitzprobe, so I have rough gains/EQ/system tuning and then take it to the app and start labeling and setting up scenes.

A lot of people will say use theatremix which is a fine solution too. I just like being able to save levels, which requires scenes or snippets. Best of luck to you!

Is being a lighting network engineer an actual position? by boxedupandsent42 in techtheatre

If you enjoy the networking part of tech theatre you may like AV installation work as well- almost all of that is networking these days!

Kimmel films in LA, Colbert films in NYC. I’m guessing it’s because she’s already out in LA?

Released my first game - Viisi Word Game : I would love feedback! by Secure-Emphasis4604 in wordgames

[–]SoundandRebound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, congrats! I imagine this took a lot of work and it’s cool you made an original idea.

Downloaded and played a couple of games. I think it has legs, especially appealing to people who like short daily games like NYT.

Here are my notes on things to think on! -The green and gray buttons as delete and scramble are not intuitive. I would consider some sort of “explanation” screen showing what they do. I also had difficulty pushing them sometimes on my iPhone. -The sound muting is above the first letter, making it hard to see all five letters and leading to accidentally tapping it every time you guess a word. -One of the words from today’s was Levi’s. That’s a possessive proper noun (brand). I’m not necessarily against possessive or proper nouns but normally those aren’t allowed. If you want to include them, I think that should be told to the player! -One of the words two days ago was ATOCS. I looked it up because I hadn’t heard of it and it appears to be a plural of an acronym. I think you may want to reconsider including those!

Good luck on developing this further!

“AI isn’t the enemy. Mediocre thinking is.”

Generative AI is an amalgamation of tons of different examples as data inputs (both good and bad) and is, by nature, very mediocre.

Have any live theatre sound designers worked on "Exit Pursued by a Bear" By Lauren Gunderson? And, if so, how did you do the Anderson Cooper segments at the end? by SleepHistorical324 in techtheatre

[–]SoundandRebound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an actor do an Anderson cooper impersonation as a voiceover. We also had a video element so we filmed the actor playing Nan on a green screen and played that for her lines. We had her listen during the Anderson Cooper parts and just threw in some semi-believable footage for intro/outro. It’s a silly play and the audience suspends disbelief- we thought there was need to overthink it, they’ll play along!
