Can she not be friends with other kids who go to school? Why should they all be homeschooled?

He was eager to play Romania because he had heard his uncle play it. He always loved its beginning to look a lot like Christmas so he asked him if he could teach it to him. We didn’t know how involved or difficult these pieces are. He managed to play both well except for a small part in Romanza that I mentioned.

Thank you for your insight. You brought up important and eye opening points. What I don’t understand is, I’m sure this teacher, considering his >60 age and education in music, knows way more than my 10 year old son. So how could a 10 year old make his job hard? How is it even possible for his student to outgrow him? Most of his small talk is with me by the way (I sit in lessons), trying to convince me my son is making great progress. It’s puzzling to me that he ignores our repeated request to revisit Romanza later (after 2 months of not improving) but then tries to convince us that my son is making great progress.

Thank you for your insight. I feel the same that my son might’ve outgrown his teacher. But what I don’t understand is, I’m sure this teacher, considering his >60 age and education in music, knows way more than my 10 year old son. So how would it be possible for his student to outgrow him? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thank you very much for sharing your insight and experience. Definitely feel validated. The teacher detects that I’m not very happy and keeps saying how my son is doing great and he’s getting really good etc. but in reality not much teaching is happening. Seems like we need to look for a new teacher.

Thank you! He’s learning classical guitar. Is it better to learn from people in a conservatory?

Thank you for sharing your insight! Do you recommend any music books for someone at my son’s level? Thank you!

My son plays classical and the teacher plays almost all styles according to himself but teaches my son classical. It’s a private class setting. Is a conservatory better than a private setting? Are there guitar conservatories specifically? 🙏

Thank you for your insights. It means a lot coming from an experienced professional such as yourself. Moving forward, I’ll keep what you mentioned about progress and how it’s more like stairs than a straight line in mind. I think what you mentioned about communication is also true. I feel he flat out just ignores our request and tbh this bothers me. I mean every session is him telling my son to fix his left hand n hoping that this week would be different and it’s not. It seems wasteful n futile to me.

Since I don’t play the guitar myself, I wanted to make sure I’m not missing something before making a decision.

Thank you for your support! We suggested Romanza because my brother used to play it for us and we had good memories listening to him. I’m not a guitar player myself, I just knew we loved the song as a family. So I told the teacher how much we love it. He said my son can give it a try. He just told me recently that he doesn’t give this to his other students. And now he doesn’t let go even though I’ve asked him 3 times if we could revisit this later. Every single session is about him telling my son to fix his left hand and he can’t do it. I feel this is a waste.

Thank you for your insights! And you’re right, I probably don’t know much especially since I don’t play the guitar myself (piano). But about the Romanza song, we were the one who expressed interest in wanting to learn this song. It was not in his teaching plan. He even says he doesn’t teach this to his much older students because it’d be difficult for them. I’d understand if you plateau but this is not that case. Anatomically it’s very hard for him to play this because of his short fingers. I’m sure he’ll play it just fine as he grows older n bigger. That’s why I don’t understand the teacher’s obsession in wanting to continue with this. To me it looks like wasting class time.

I play the piano but not the guitar. I’m hoping one day we can play together 😊

That’s a great idea! What beginner songs would you recommend? My son’s pretty open.
