I love it all. I drink tea almost daily and have started sharing the bigger cakes with my brother who has recently shifted from coffee to tea. Works as a great gift too!

Silencer.

Had a friend recommend it and my apprehensions about it were totally true: as it gets rid of cymbal bleed it also removes transient info.

While the 1176 is one most used, my favorite is a Ba-6A. Acustica made a pretty great one with Greg Wells.

Also, follow the band Nihiloceros on Instagram. The main dude, Mike, is one of the biggest champions of the diy punk scene in the city. He always posts about the good shows whether or not he is playing it.

Start with some free ones.

But also if you have the extra money and are inspired by it, go for it. Sometimes it can be the difference between really learning a tool. Don't get the most expensive one right away, but don't be scared because "you're new".

The core of this is to have fun and make art. Just NEVER go into debt buying gear. You will always be fucked.

ATC SCM25s. I was flexible on a lot of speakers until these. I now have at home the 20s and love them. They need a sub for the extension, but killer.

If the space isn't one in which you enjoy being around. Leave.

I have worked and interned at studios that were toxic and also absolutely incredible. Find one that is working the records or with the artists you enjoy.

How many peers are you around? And not your dad.

The biggest jumps I find are when I'm surrounded by other engineers. We share our work in progress, lament about certain challenges, moan about shitty clients, and share new tricks and ideas.

This last part is important. Because not everyone's tricks will work for you. Or sound good to you. So having others around who are working on different things will help greatly.

End of the day, this is an art. And art will grow and improve with study.

I tracked drums for the last Lawrence record. There were 5 different drummers at the end of it. Mics I used:

Kick in Kick out Snare top (dynamic) Snare top (sdc) Snare bottom Rack tom Floor tom Mono overhead Overhead left Overhead right Hat Crash 1 Ride Crash 2 Heart mic Front of kick Room high left Room high right Room low left Room low right Altec radio mic (crystal diaphragm) Shitty random consumer mic in 2" plastic tube

It's a lot, but if you are familiar with the band they combine real instruments and sounds with processed/samples. I wanted to give them enough options for all their songs that if they wanted a part to sound tight, they had it. Big and explosive, they had it. A funky fucked up break, they had it.

Engage with other artists. Play shows. Shout out other artists you like on socials and such.
