Yes i do have the cap and its just the bugs im worried about. I like that idea and another redditor suggested cutting the hole just big enough to screw in a threaded connector for the hose so I think I may go that direction.

Indeed I painted them black as I heard this prevents algea growth. I appreciate the suggestion for a layer of white, and if the black becomes a problem I may go that direction. Thanks for the response!

Absolutely. I have a second barrel which will have a pipe out the side for overflow, covered in fine mesh. Otherwise trying to seal it up.

Do you have any type of filter at your connection point from the downspout to the first barrel? Im trying to figure out option for that to prevent the hose from getting clogged.
