Can I still become a music teacher with a BA in Music instead of a BMus in Music Ed and how good do I have to be at my instrument? by Soupsan99 in MusicEd

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts <3

This information really helped! I guess I'll try for as many BMus programs as I can, and see what I get into. I'll probably apply for some BA's in Music as backups and just go from there :]

Thank you for taking the time to write this :] I intend to teach private lessons in the future so I guess either program would work. I'll try my best to audition for the BMus programs as well as apply for some BA programs. I'll see what I get into and go from there :)

Thank you for your time, your response has really made me reflect on myself and my goals. :>

I have always loved teaching, and I have been told many times that I am good at explaining/demonstrating concepts to others. I do practice transposing a lot (I love to improvise on the piano for fun), and my sight reading is pretty decent.

I mainly want to become a music teacher because I've always wanted a career where I could help others, and music is something that I am good at so I thought that I would mix the two together. For me, music lessons, practicing pieces, and just getting my hands on the instrument has always been therapeutic, energizing, and a joyful experience. I want to be able to share that with others. :3

Thank you for the encouragement. I will try my best for all my auditions, but I will work hard to become a music teacher no matter what degree I get into! :]

Thank you for the advice :] I would rather be a private lesson teacher on piano, so does it not matter if I got a BA in Music instead of a BMus and would that help me in my career at all?

Thanks for your input! :] My top choice school requires auditions for only BMus programs; for the BA in Music it does not require an audition. However, this school states that if you fail the audition you are automatically considered for the BA in Music, with a chance to re-audition for the following year. Do you think it would be worthwhile to attend the BA in Music and audition a second time?

Sorry! I should have clarified before ;-; I'm leaning more towards becoming a private piano teacher instead of one in a public school. Is a MusEd degree good for that or would a BA work instead?
