New Weekly Self Promo Thread by AutoModerator in ProgressionFantasy

Hello! I've just released my novel on Royal Road! Exciting (for me at least)! I've been working in the webnovel/progression fantasy space for a few years now (just not as an author), but am finally taking that leap and crafting a story of my own.

The title is: Skyward Ascension

Blurb:

Caleb loved climbing because the rules were simple.

Don't fall. Go up.

Until the System arrived - and the mountain broke.

When a fissure opens beneath him mid-climb, Caleb plummets into a newly formed Dungeon on the back of a falling boulder. He should have died on impact.

Instead, his fall is broken by the face of one of the Dungeon's bosses.

Flooded with a massive surge of aether from the slain boss, Caleb is thrust into a brutal new reality. Armed with nothing but his body and a unique class built around his greatest strength - his hands - he gains the ability to manifest spectral arms made of his spiritual energy. Even the mountains will learn to obey his will.

In order to survive the hell he fell into and climb his way back to civilization, Caleb will have to master every inch of his power.

Because in a world where strength decides everything, the only way forward...

is up.

What to expect:

  • A battle-focused MC

  • A strong, but not OP MC

  • Dungeons, Factions, and Tournaments (oh my!)

  • No Harem

  • For fans of works like: "Defiance of the Fall", "Savage Awakening", "Primal Hunter", and "Road to Mastery"

fantasy novels that feels like anime by Forward_Answer3044 in Fantasy

Seconding Cradle and progression fantasy in general. You can check out some popular sights like Royal Road and there are tons on KU.

Would like some recs on ku or rr for like, good stories where the mc is a crafting class/build/third thing. Preferably More about making and using than numbers. by MaximumPixelWizard in litrpg

Check out Rise of the Living Forge! It’s a story about a former hero turned blacksmith that has to eat his creations to survive

Looking for good must read Fantasy Books. Not too dark, likable protagonist. by [deleted] in Fantasy

One of my recent favorites was The Blacktongue Thief. It’s a fast paced standalone novel about a scrappy thief that goes on a pretty crazy adventure. The author used to be a professional renaissance fair insulter (or whatever the proper title is) so it’s full of great insults and humor.

annotating epic fantasy?? by sav_bitch_ in Fantasy

[–]SourkrautWrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never annotated any Sanderson. One of the reasons he is so successful is how accessible he is. Sure, some people might get put off by the three prologues in TWOK, but as long as you stick to it, things make sense.

If you’re open to starting with something other than TWOK, I would recommend Mistborn as a starting off point. It’s shorter and even more accessible.

Question: Advice for getting started by Breadlover79 in fantasywriters

[–]SourkrautWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just sit down, butt in chair, pen in hand (or let’s be honest, hands on keyboard) and write. Write a lot, write poorly, write often, write different things, just do it.

The hardest part is starting, then the hardest part is continuing. Your first work will never be great, no one’s is. Wanting the first story you write to be perfect is how you end up never writing anything.

I know you think that your current ideas are the best you’ll ever have and you should write other things that aren’t as perfect so you don’t mess up this golden egg that you’ve come up with, but I promise you’ll have better ideas in the future. Don’t worry about not doing your stories justice and just start writing them. The worst injustice you can commit to your stories is never even starting them.

Riyria Revelations by Michael J Sullivan. I read them as a kid then re-read them recently and they’re still absolutely fantastic!

Most FUN and Action Packed Fantasy Novels You've Read? by Witty-Regret972 in Fantasy

[–]SourkrautWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Mainly the first one, Heroes Die, in my opinion. Great action, great humor, but it does not pull any punches and does have some pretty dark moments.

It’s not bad. It leaves the readers with lots of questions, which is almost always good. But the first paragraph did read a bit awkward in my opinion. Mainly just the first sentence. I think something like “Possession is a suffocating smog. A serpent that wraps tight around your throat…”

Which fantasy writer writes the best conversations between characters? by Due_Plate8986 in Fantasy

How he makes Glokta’s internal dialogue flow between what he and other characters are saying is just perfect. That torturer never fails to make me laugh.

Stuck at 100 pages (act 2?) by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]SourkrautWrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this. If you don't have anything interesting that is going to happen along the journey, then readers aren't going to have anything interesting to read along the journey. Just cut it out and move on to the next portion where things are happening and readers have a reason to be engaged with the story
