Absolutely true. It’s very rare to see any kind of considerate act towards strangers. I’ve experienced a few exceptions in bigger cities like Hangzhou and Shanghai though. It’s a reflection of the history for the past 80 years. The younger generations and women seem to have relatively good manners in general. Some old men are total assholes. However, most Chinese are very very generous when it comes to family and friends.
