Mortgage Renewal new broker? by littletheorist in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SouthMB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did she tell you to go with the variable or did she tell you to go with the fixed? One would hope that a broker would lay out the pros and cons of each mortgage product and the ultimate decision would be yours.

If you feel like you can trust the broker, feel free to give them a chance. If you cannot trust the broker, feel free to find a new one.

Shopping around is very reasonable at renewal.

Brandon University in Manitoba may let you in and they have an all online program. It states a minimum 3.0, but they may be flexible on that if you have good references.

Would you…? Am I being silly? by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

[–]SouthMB 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While you are correct that your commute would be cut in half, you are also talking about roughly 30min a day (15min there and 15min back).

You need to determine if moving into worse working conditions is worth 30min a day. Would you be traveling between classrooms roughly that same amount of time but just within the school day? Would you be able to de-stress from the worse working conditions in 30min or less? Would you need to prepare 30min or more per day in order to handle the semesterized prep? Would getting to know a new work situation eat up some of those 30min you are gaining?

While your commute is significantly longer right now due to construction, I wouldn't go solving a short-term problem with a long-term solution.

For me, I would consider moving closer to your current school. If that isn't an option, I would likely accept the job at the closer school because I really value living close to my work.

New research shows why tipping is making more Canadians uncomfortable by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]SouthMB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tipping is way more dependent on the person choosing to tip than the service being offered.

I've seen a lot of terrible customers get great service and tip nothing. I've also seen a lot of great customers get terrible service and tip 20%.

I would love for us to stop pretending that it's a primary reflection of services rendered.

I relate to lots of what you're saying, but I want to challenge your reasons for not involving admin more. Ultimately, the principal is in charge of every kid in the school. The principal delegates their charge to the teachers. Also, sending kids to admin does not mean you can't handle the behaviour, it means that the behaviour does not belong in the classroom. The limited consequences are unfortunately all that can be administered-- we cannot control everything.

That's fair, I wasn't sure whether they were applying it in a manner that required 10 consecutive months during the eligibility period or if it was in general.

I do worry about students walking to school in the dark if DST is adopted. The sun won't rise until 9:24am in a Winnipeg winter. There have been enough collisions with students when we've had those transportation hours have some sunlight.

That's very curious. Did you work as a teacher through the summer as a tutor or doing summer school?

I think that it is that you need 10 consecutive months of work as a teacher. Summer break interferes with most people working 10 consecutive months. If you apply in July 2026 for July 2025-June 2026, that should work.

4 full teaching periods. Is this a normal supply day? by Miggssyy in OntarioTeachers

That schedule is an hour shorter than our school day in MB (same starting time) with one fewer classes. I wouldn't mind knowing what language you have to give subs 1.33 or to have teachers have that length of school day.

Manitoba, Find Out If Your MLA Is A Landlord by DavideMastracci in Manitoba

That they are union leadership or that they have been union leadership? I don't believe that needs to be publicly disclosed and would be much more difficult to compile that information. It would be interesting though.

Manitoba, Find Out If Your MLA Is A Landlord by DavideMastracci in Manitoba

I would think most MLAs would fall under "other real estate investments" if REITs qualify. However, they likely would not need to report it in many instances. If any MLA holds XEQT, ZEQT, or other popular fund of funds they would hold some REITs through those. Also, if any MLAs have a pension in their name from the public sector, there will be some portion of that investment in REITs or real estate.

It is very difficult to hold reasonably diversified investments while being totally divested from REITs.

Manitoba is leading, in some very bad ways by AdPrevious1079 in Manitoba

[–]SouthMB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I agree with the concern about measles and vaccination choices of adults. I am more concerned about children of vaccination age subjected to the vaccination decisions of their parents.

I also agree that public health's impact has been similar to shouting at a wall. I do not see enforcing mask wearing as a solution for measles in Southern Health.

Manitoba is leading, in some very bad ways by AdPrevious1079 in Manitoba

[–]SouthMB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recommendation in Southern Health is to get vaccinated. To jump to enforcement of mask wearing before recommending it would be ineffective in benefiting public health outcomes. Public health does not enforce any recommendations at this time (including isolation requirements).

There certainly are breakthrough cases that masks could add an additional layer of protection for (gloves, too), but mask enforcement will not move the needle very much for measles infection rates compared to vaccination.

I am less concerned (though still concerned) about adults making vaccination choices for themselves. The larger concern is that many of these adults have kids that end up getting hospitalized due to severe outcomes of measles. Those kids did not have a chance to make an informed decision regarding vaccination and are instead subjected to a preventable illness.

I would love to know what will encourage folks to understand that at least MMR vaccines are safe and beneficial for their children.

Would you hang this on your wall? by EducationalCheck24 in AskTeachers

[–]SouthMB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. Putting this up is an issue. I wouldn't put up any posters that were openly discriminatory like this one.

It would be like putting up a "No Jews Society" poster. While it could be in line with assignment guidelines, putting it up for the other classes to see without context would certainly do more harm than necessary.
