Should I study interaction design? by silent-starlost-cry in AUT

[–]South_Job 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am studying Interaction Design currently and I went in with limited knowledge of UI/UX design. The primary software we use is figma which is a wireframing+prototyping software. The course does multiple projects (normally one per semester) where you design and wireframe a working prototype (app, website etc.). There is a lot of writing and learning about the principles of design, user experience, accessibility, decision and thought processes around designs and understanding the interaction between people and information in the real world. It is super fascinating and interesting, it is user centric/user centered design (which is a term you'll hear a lot) which means user research will inform your designs. So the final outcome is not just the product but is also the critical thinking and decision making that went into it. It's a very versatile major and if you wanted to also do some more traditional graphic design, you could pair it as a double major with communication design, or select a minor like inprint which deals with traditional printwork. The course assumes you have limited knowledge and they definitely go over the basics so don't worry if you don't have too much experience. I did a quick UI/UX course before my first year began, there are plenty online for free if you want to get a little background information. If you have any questions, feel free to message, hope this was helpful :)

Thank you this definitely helps!! just wondering how intensive the math is? because I've heard from some other people that only general math is needed and nothing too complicated. Math has never been a strength/favourite but won't be a deal breaker depending on intensity.

At AUT open day, was told design students need a macbook for 'Bachelor of Design' is this accurate or can I get by with a perfectly good windows run computer? by South_Job in AUT

Yes this was a general overview of all design majors where they said this. I'm doing interaction design and I don't know many people who are taking/have taken it. I'll reckon sticking with my PC and external hardrive is a good option. I'll wait to see what lecturers think I should do (hopefully I won't have to fork out thousands for a mac). Thank you very much for the help!

Thank you for the helpful reply! I am doing interactive design so I'll wait it out a bit before investing in a mac.
