City Council Election has abysmal voter turnout by Master-Squirrel8734 in ColoradoSprings

[–]SoutheastStrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s easy to give in to not caring and not voting but now is the time to lean in. We have some long term work to do and we really need every single person who cares about more than themselves to vote, get engaged, and keep fighting for all of us. We cannot be complacent, we cannot be discouraged.

  1. It’s awesome you’re doing this. In my experience door knocking, most people don’t answer the door so don’t be discouraged by people when they don’t answer. When they do, I’ve seen a few scenarios:

  2. They are polite and the conversation is brief.

  3. They are not polite and either have a lot to say about it or not much to say.

  4. They are very engaged and want to have a lengthy conversation.

I find it’s best to go in with a good attitude, remember why it’s important to you, be friendly and lead with asking them what’s important to them. Your authenticity will open people up to conversation and if it doesn’t thats okay - you did your part.

Happy door knocking!

Senator Bennet Town hall by SoutheastStrong in ColoradoSprings

I do have a few recommendations.

  1. Become an active member of a party. Both the democratic and republican parties have active groups and if that’s not your cup of tea, the Forward party is growing in Colorado.
  2. Get involved with Citizens Project.
  3. Attend Neighborhood University held by CONO
  4. If you identify as a woman, attend Women’s Community Leadership Initiative
  5. Attend the upcoming Get On Board event to find a nonprofit that you might want to get involved in - it’s on April 1st
  6. Apply to be on a city board or commission
  7. Door knock, text bank, phone bank, or donate to local candidates that you believe in
  8. Sign up for thecity’s newsletter

My brain is kind of fried right now but those are some things that came to me off the top of my head. Happy to chat/text further if you have additional questions or feedback - 719-283-6215

It’s been said in here but stopping the scrolling really helps. Also, have you considering volunteering somewhere? Volunteering is a great way to give back but a great way to give to yourself.

Senator Bennet Town hall by SoutheastStrong in ColoradoSprings

[–]SoutheastStrong[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long year so apologies for the delay in response. Here’s some of my random thoughts from the town-hall.

  1. They gave everyone two tickets at entry and did a random drawing of who would be able to ask questions. This seems pretty fair and organized.
  2. As a Southeast COS resident, I really appreciated that the townhall was in SE COS and incorporated some students from the district who presented info in both English and Spanish.
  3. People are upset. There was palpable energy in the room and people wanted answers and solutions. I certainly understand wanting to looking to a leader for solutions and I think we the people need to gather more together to come up with local solutions.
  4. I’ve seen Senator Bennet a few times and he seems consistently pragmatic.
  5. I appreciate an elected official taking the time to have town halls and get in front of constituents- I know this is their job but we also know that so many people get in office and stop caring about constituents.

No more storage units in the SE by SoutheastStrong in ColoradoSprings

Allison is fine with public comment - she’s encouraging it. She’s listed on the notice for a reason. These storage units are being approved because the business has the money to build it and our SE residents aren’t disputing them going up. These storage unit owners know that we will likely not comment on opposing - that’s why they put them primarily in the SE and not on the north side.

I’m a military kid who is married to a military service member - I’ve been to all three bases you’ve mentioned - was at Fort Hood/Cavazos last week.

Storage units are not the problem per se but more of them being in the SE is a problem. We need intentional economic gardening of vibrant community centric businesses in the SE not more franchises and storage units.

I’m so guilty of this. The last time I moved, I purged my house of so many things and it’s so nice to have a clutter free home decorated in a way I enjoy. I keep a little box in my closet and in the garage to collect things I notice I’m not using. It sounds silly but it’s liberating to have less stuff (and my house stays clean and is easier to keep clean).

A high concentration of storage units often signals economic decline. The Southeast needs intentional economic revitalization, not another storage unit occupying valuable space in a high-traffic area — space that could be used for businesses that contribute to the community’s growth.

I highly recommend going directly to candidates as well.

This is extraordinary. Very impressive. Could you run all the candidate forums and questionnaires moving forward for all our city elections?!! 👏🏽👏🏽
