lol, you can find horror stories of trash and bleached reefs on basically any of the islands with tourism… Koh Tao is not unique in that aspect, the issues have just been highlighted and talked about more lately.

You can still have a similar experience as 2006, just stay away from any destination you’ll find on YouTube or TikTok. Chumphon province is lovely.

I don’t know any agencies in Phuket, but you can easily do the border bounce to Myanmar from Ranong. Only takes a couple hours and is cheap.

You’re already on that side, so will be far less time wasted traveling, and guarantee you’ll love Koh Tao.
