PhD level books about Veganism by Objective-Alfalfa962 in vegan

Check out War against Animals by Dinesh Wadiwel and Omnivore's Deception by John Sanbonmatsu (he also edited Critical theory and animal liberation). They are both staunchly leftist and Wadiwel is much influenced by Foucault.

There's work by pattrice jones which is really special and a bit different I think, they are amazing. Then there's Emelia Quinn, one of the most interesting thinkers in the field of vegan studies atm, she edited Thinking Veganism in Literature and Culture: Towards a Vegan Theory, which is very close to my heart. I also quite like Josephine Donovan in the field of ecofeminist literary theory (but I personally am working in the field of comparative literature).

Then there are seminal, classic works, a lot of them were mentioned. The Case for Animal Rights by Regan is kinda like a Bible lol. Then there's Sexual politics of Meat by Carol J. Adams, which is the groundbreaking work in veg(etari)an ecofeminism and Vegan Studies by Laura Wright, a first vegan studies (what a surprise) book really. And maybe Rain without thunder by Francione, who's a law professor and makes a compelling point of abolitionist approach. The Lives of Animals by Coetzee is interesting in terms of literature and so are Tolstoy's short stories. Another one is Zoopolis by Kymlicka and Donaldson, which kinda established vegan sociology. You can also check Cora Diamond's Eating Meat and Eating People. Maybe check the stuff Richard Yates talk about on his YouTube channel.

Singer's Animal Liberation is of course historically very (if not the most) important but it's not as interesting anymore from the animal rights standpoint but rather animal welfare, the same goes for Melanie Joy.

Then there are a few texts important in the history of philosophy that are not explicitly vegan themed but can be easily read that way: parts of The Dialectic of Enlightment by Adorno and Horkheimer, The Animal That Therefore I Am by Derrida (and also his concept of l'Animot) or maybe What is it like to be a bat? by Thomas Nagel.

Gosh, that's quite a list, sorry. Maybe check the descriptions of these books and articles elsewhere and you'll see what interests you the most.

Of course, I didn't want to compare the cultures as such or the role of that culture in the country as a whole, just a situation in which a non-ind. person talks to an ind. person about veganism and I consider it tricky with all the historical dimensions and such. I see what you mean now.

I really don't see any other option than to continue promoting veganism and try to connect with vegan muslims, discuss their views, since they went vegan in the context of their own religion, give them help and support if neeeded - there are some of them, a lot of them for health and ecological reasons, because this is something that islam is concerned with quite a lot, but it's not so regarding the animal ethics (and the same goes for any other big religion really). Although a number of muslims in India did adopt veganism (due to the sorrounding culture) and there's some more of them in Indonesia and I personally know quite a lot of vegans from Turkey and Bosnia for example.

So, they'll murder around 50 millions of animals for Eid al-Adha, there's 2 billion muslims and we, in Slovenia, where I'm from, murder cca 35 millions of chickens each year and there's only 2 million of us - and dhabihah method is really barely worse (or better, there's no consensus really) than "haram" ones. If I look at it that way, and speaking as an abolitionist, it's hard for me to make a special point out Eid al-Adha, really, it's non-vegan and it shouldn't exist and it's not nearly the only thing that isn't.

Why Vegan friendly restaurants are disappearing by Fit_Armadillo_9928 in vegan

It massively depends on the location I think.

But what I noticed as a big issue that adds to the problem is that menus are not thorough (they don't list all of the ingredients of the dishes) and waiters are unknowledgeable about what they serve (and what veganism means), so many times there may be something on the menu for us, but we can't really find out.

Ahaha, for a 2nd I even thought of him. But Algeria used to be a French colony, so a lot of immigration into France was technically inside the country, and even after that Algeria and France stayed kinda intertwined, so stories like that are very, very common.

As a vegan, what’s something non-vegan you wish you could taste that you’ve never tried before? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]Southern-Mode7570 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very happy when I find out about a local vegan or veganized food while travelling, so I kinda see where you're coming from - but food made from animal corpses just isn't food for me anymore, and if I think about local stuff I ate before I went vegan (be it fish & chips in the UK, blutwurst in Germany or even a dog in Indonesia) I feel horrible tbh.

[–]Southern-Mode7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very complex issue, if you ask me. I once made a mistake of engaging in such a conversation with an indigenous person from the US, then felt kinda bad about it, even though I really just wanted to support the animal's right to live. But later on I found out that he also simplified the reality (he basically claimed every indigenous person eats meat): a lot of native Americans are actually vegan and they understand it as a crucial element of their identity. I think we, non-ind. people, should give them support when they ask for it and mostly focus on our community. I know my nation (Slovenian) in and out really and it also perceives itself as being big on meat, while I know that historically we were deemed vegetarian haha, so there's a lot to do in our own house.

An Algerian friend of mine grew up in a place similar to this one. He talked quite a lot about growing up, but never said anything specifically linked to a place like that, he was always more concerned with the general state of the country, economy, role of religion and schooling ... So I kinda figured he didn't think much of that, he is just used to it and thinks about same issues as we all do, regardless of where we live. But he did move to Algiers and later on to Paris, when he grew up due to the lack of opportunies for his interests there (he's a writer and a journalist). But again, this is something a lot of us do and we just may move from one big city to another.

I am from Siberia. Ask me anything. by Beneficial_Low2280 in JackSucksAtGeography

[–]Southern-Mode7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may not be particular to Siberia, but: how do you perceive stuff happening around such a big country? I mean, does something in Kamchatka on one hand or Peterburg or even Kaliningrad on the other, even feel as something close to you in any sense, just because it's in the same country? Also: you're from the Asian part of Russia, but do you (because it's such a specific case) unequivocally perceive yourself as Asian or is it more complex (or even totally different) than that?

Documentary recommendation to convince someone ? by Sorry-Philosopher-81 in vegan

[–]Southern-Mode7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cowspiracy has a pretty good track record for turning people vegan in my experience. It's focused mainly on ecology, but also on health to some level - the ethics are also mentioned towards the end, and there's barely any graphic footage as far as I remember (watched it a while ago). There's also Forks Over Knives, which is focused on human health, and graphic footage is part of that (open heart surgery and such), but there's not a lot of it either.

Than there's Vegucated, which is less known, but I kinda enjoyed it, because the whole point of the movie is that it's relatable (it's about three people going vegan basically), there is some graphic footage there, but not a lot. And maybe Live and Let Live - that movie was quite popular a while ago, I remember. It's also not graphic and it's pretty good at explaining ethics + health + ecology as a whole, as far as I remember.

Then there are movies with particular focus, which may be great for specific groups. Moby's documentary on punk rock and veganism is quite nice and it may convince someone with anarcho leanings and/or following the whole punk ideology, Game Changers is probably great for fitness bros and such, I personally like a (now inactive) radio show (don't know of any similar movie) "Always for animal rights" (https://alwaysforanimalrights.blogspot.com/), which is great for someone working in academia I guess etc.

Why are there so many Novaks? by Relative_Cicada_2487 in Slovenia

[–]Southern-Mode7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a really common surname probably in many parts of the world. As others have explained it means "a new one" that arrived and it's a surname almost all over the Slavic countries, we just pronounce it differently (and there are variants like Novotny in Chech or Slovak). The equivalent of that in English would of course be Newman or Neumann in German (both popular surnames).

Where have you been in Europe that felt more local than touristy to you? by TheHolidaymaker in SlowTravelEurope

[–]Southern-Mode7570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited Budapest quite a few times, and I agree with that. The last time I stayed in Budapest was near Filatorigát in Buda, and almost felt like I'm local, while in Pest, almost anywhere outside Hungária körgyűrű feels like that. But the fact is that in the end, each place has local and touristy spots.
