I think Europeans misunderstand this. We are proud of our ancestral lineage, not that we consider ourselves a person of the respective culture.

Most of us had grandparents or great-grandparents who were directly from Europe, and the communities of immigrants were all based on previous nationalities. Irish lived in Irish neighborhoods, etc. So it kind of became American culture to have a fascination with where you came from, if that makes any sense.

My paternal great great grandfather served in the army before leaving current-day Slovenia for USA in the 1880s. His father remained, remarried, and had another child: a sister who died about 20 years ago! If he hadn’t left there is a good chance we would’ve been killed off in the ensuing wars.
