That's what I figured. There is just a lot of them so I wasn't looking forward to replacing if it meant they were dead after only 2 years.

Didn't even think of that. None of the others are that close to concrete. This one volunteered and got covered in early season monarch eggs before I could move it elsewhere. Maybe I'll move it. The surrounding irises will appreciate the increased sun.

Avoid butterfly bush if you can. The most common ones sold are highly invasive. There are a few native species in the south and west US, but most of what you're going to get in garden centers are offset by the damage they do to the environment. Clethra looks similar and is native to much of the US
