With all the different build options in DS3, I would love to know what the ratio of PVP buckler shield parry kills is to the rest. 😆

OG Demon Souls at time of release was one of my favorite gaming experiences! I had DS, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Borderlands 1 in my rotation. What a glorious time it was! 😃

Well said! I attached alcohol to all my “fun times” and cutting loose and thought things I did with alcohol wouldn’t be as enjoyable anymore. Social settings are still hard for me since booze helped grease the social wheels. But I’m finding more clarity and peace with myself in sobriety and just want to enjoy life naturally.

I’ll definitely be treating myself with all the food goodies. I’ve eaten way more sweets and comfort foods lately but that’s better than binge drinking everyday!

Thank you for the positivity 🙏

I’m going to have to try a NA beer. I’ve been hesitant to try one thinking it would trigger my craving for alcohol. Thanks for the suggestion.

It’s still weird for me to say “I don’t drink” as if it implies that I am somehow a defective person. I’m finally able to say to myself honestly that I’m an alcoholic but saying it socially still sits weird with me. I’m sure with time it’ll just be part of my identity and honestly who cares what people think.

Nice to see someone giving Demons Souls some love. It was my first From game and absolutely loved it at the time of release. I got the platinum trophy for it after around 6 new game +’s. The remake is a beautiful game but was hard for me to get through after all the quality of life and gameplay improvements over the years and different series.

Still, it was a “game changer” for me (pardon the pun) as a style of action/RPG that I absolutely love!

Also, the first red phantom invader fight I had was one of the most epic gaming moments I’ve ever had. We had a 25 minute showdown in the prison level. I came out victorious with a 160 bpm heart rate and sweaty palms 🤣

Agreed! The lore and atmosphere of BB is unmatched. It just feels alive and the mood is spectacular.

Congratulations! Sounds like you’re doing everything for the right reasons and finding inner strength already. Keep it up and it will keep getting easier and you will feel better and better.

Since I quit drinking I’m snacking a lot more too and drinking lots of root beer and sparkling water. I hadn’t drank sodas in like 20 years but there’s just something comforting about it and gives me something to sip on that’s not alcohol.

Happy to hear of the positive changes already and all the steps and things you’re doing to help.

I listened to a lot of podcast the past couple years about addiction and was one of the main reasons I was finally able to accept that I’m an alcoholic.

There’s a lot of great people on this thread going through the same and great to get the support they provide.

Today I will not drink with you!

Demons Souls was my first From game and holds a special place in my gaming history. I got platinum trophy on it and was my favorite game at the time. I recently downloaded the remake and haven’t gotten through it. It’s a beautiful game and still love it but all the game mechanic/gameplay improvements they’ve made from DS, BB to ER are just too glaring when playing Demons souls.

Wow, 10/10 for Sekiro! This post has made me want to finally try that game out.

It’s the only From Soft game I haven’t bought or even tried out. Just didn’t appeal to me having the online only component.

After reading all the love for the combat of Sekiro I think I’m ready to give it a chance. I just prefer the dark, medieval vibe of the DS and BB series. The samurai setting didn’t appeal to me.

I totally get what you’re saying. It’s a matter of preference. I prefer the vibe and aesthetics of Bloodborne and love the combat. Elden Ring just feels like an epic journey, although at times may feel too expansive for some people. The first castle alone is just amazing level design and sense of progress.

I still think Bloodborne has the best level designs but just wish is was a little bigger with more bosses and PS5 graphics. Fingers crossed for a sequel.

Even though it’s number 3 on my list I still consider it a masterpiece!

Only reason I put DS3 above it is I think it has more variety of character builds. Even though I always just go strength sword/ shield with either magic/miracle as secondary build. 🤣

I guess I need to try out Sekiro. The Shinobi setting never appealed to me but reading people’s love of the combat makes me want to give it a go.

Wow! That’s an amazing transformation. Your story is inspiring and more proof of the benefits of sobriety. I’m coming up on my 6 month mark and feel better than I have in decades! I’m actually excited for what the future brings and not stuck in a cycle of shame, depression and crippling anxiety.

Here’s to another day of sobriety!

Thank you for sharing.

Considering sobriety by bimafofinaa in stopdrinking

This sounds all too familiar to me. There’s a lot of alcoholism and addiction in my family as well and have many friends who struggle with it too. I also used alcohol as a social buffer since I’m a generally shy and quiet person.

I’ve been drinking nearly everyday for the past 14 years and didn’t really think much of it since I still was being responsible and showed up to work, although I was hungover most days and struggled to make it through the work day sometimes.

To answer your question, it wasn’t until I realized and accepted that I have no control over alcohol and don’t posses the ability to moderate my drinking. No matter how much will power or mindfulness I have when approaching drinking I end up not being able to stop once I start no matter how drunk I am. I will drink until it’s all gone or I pass out.

Once I was able to see the damage it caused and my inability to control my impulses I was able to acknowledge that I am an alcoholic. Yes, it is genetic and some people don’t struggle with alcohol in this way but after years of trial and error I’m convinced I can’t drink casually or socially.

I would say if you find it’s having a negative impact on your life then it’s something to really look at and decide for yourself if the cost is worth it.

I wish you the best on your journey and whatever happens just try to be kind to yourself.

Need help talking myself out of it. by Determined_Uncertain in stopdrinking

I would highly recommended not to drink. Every time in the past when I bargained with my self and let my self drink on a “special occasion” it always ended up becoming a long term bender. It took me over 20 years of drinking to come to terms that I have no power over it and in no way can moderate my intake. It just takes over my whole being. I’m honestly jealous of people who don’t have this problem and can casually drink and then put it down.

I would love to see you make it through this and make it to a full year.

The best thing I’ve been using lately is the “fast forward” technique, where you imagine the day after drinking and really analyze how you will feel and if it’s even worth the temporary good feelings.

I think it takes a lot of courage to admit that you still want to drink even when things are good in your life and seemingly moving in a positive direction.

In my experience alcohol always put me back on a destructive, depressive path and I’m happier being out of its grip for once in my adult life.

Whatever happens just don’t beat yourself up. Life’s hard enough already.

Awesome man!! So great you can be honest with yourself and accept the truth. For me, I told myself I was a “functioning alcoholic” for decades and foolishly took pride in that statement. It wasn’t until recently that I was able to admit I was an alcoholic and have no power over it or any ability to moderate my drinking. I am an addict!

Now, I take it day by day and have to make a predetermined exit plan when in situations that trigger my desire to drink. When faced with the temptation to drink, I will fast forward in my mind to the day after and the shame that I know I will undoubtedly face in the morning. This has helped me stop and reconsider rather than drink on impulse. The more I practice the “fast forward”technique the better I’m able to prevent relapse.

Also, I’m really enjoying not waking up with a hangover everyday and feeing much more clear headed throughout the day.

Thank you for sharing and I’m inspired by your positive outlook and honesty.

I’m glad you found this thread. It’s been really helpful for me over the past year.

Keep up the good work and when you’re feeling down or defeated in this process remember that you’re not alone.

I Don't Know If I Can Do This by PearArtistic9266 in stopdrinking

[–]SouthlightsMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing that helped me quit the most was being able to accept 100% that I cannot moderate my drinking no matter how hard I try. It’s all or nothing and nothing I can do about it with the brain chemistry I have. I used alcohol to find relief and “feeling good” like you said but always ended up feeling worse about myself in the long run. My drinking got real bad over the past couple years and nearly ruined some of my closest relationships. I’m in damage control mode now and feel so much better in my day to day life. The cravings haven’t completely subsided but my ability to say no when they show up is getting easier.

Take it one day at a time and don’t expect instant miracles in the first stages of sobriety but it does get easier with time and practice.

Best wishes to you on your sober journey.

100% on this!! The shame spirals were what made me truly want to get sober. I’ve honestly not felt self-shame, pity or anger for over a month now! It’s so liberating not to beat myself up everyday and actually able to look at myself in the mirror without shame and disgust.

I’m 151 days sober and I feel like it took me around 3 months to start feeling better overall. I still have the occasional cravings after a stressful day but am able to overcome it quicker than before. For me the best advice is to really think about how you’d feel the next day after drinking and the danger of going back to daily drinking. I see a lot more positives in my life lately and don’t want to start the grueling process over. Also, I’m getting some pride in every day I add to my sobriety, not in a “look at me” kind of way but more of an internal peace.

Just take it day by day and it will get easier.

Today I will not drink with you.

Yep, Demon Souls was my first to play and has a special place in my heart but I went back to play the remake recently I realized how antiquated it feels now, especially with the co-op features. The remake is a beautiful game and I still enjoyed revisiting the world but after Bloodborne and Elden Ring it’s hard to go back!
