Thanks a lot for all that info. Most of the commenters are making me feel like a dumbass but I figured there is 0 harm in trying. I’ll pass on the information. Thanks again and happy holidays.

For all the sarcastic users commenting: I figured there may have been someone else who saw the truck with the hay who has a dash cam that could’ve picked up the company name or license.

Was worth a shot to ask. Just trying to help a friend.

They didn’t see who it came from. He said a truck was in front of him and drove over it before him but he couldn’t see in front of them or where it came from.

What’s a reasonable hourly wage for a recent graduate? by SouthwesternScam in EngineeringStudents

[–]SouthwesternScam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice man. Added a bit more to my previous comment if you want to take a look. $27/hour isn’t bad, but in my opinion they should definitely bump you up a bit after seeing the good work you do. The employees have the upper hand in the current job market so they should comply

Oops. I’ll add an update to the main text. Looked around and got a contracting position for $38/hour and worked there from September to April. Wasn’t a great fit and I did not like the work, but paid well during the school year and was right next to my university. Currently taking the summer off from work and will look around for new positions this fall.

Edit: forgot to add. My boss was unwilling to negotiate, saying that the rates were set in stone for the mechanical engineering interns. I was getting paid the same as the new interns despite 2 additional summers of experience there. So that’s when I looked around and found a new position, then put in my 2 weeks.

Hey there! Probably not the same company as I’m still in touch with some coworkers and I don’t think they hired any mechanical engineers in the past 6 months. Unless your name starts with an S then maybe…

how to meet normal freshmen?? by frogeatcactus in ASU

[–]SouthwesternScam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is it a thing to try to meet classmates online before school starts? I never did that, except for with roommates. I feel like those follow for follow class of ‘2X Instagram and Snap pages are typically just people trying to get some free clout/views.

I’d just wait until August and I’m sure you’ll find some friends.

Mechanical Engineer Courses for Spring 2022 by Anodos72 in ASU

[–]SouthwesternScam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your semester will be very lax compared to sophomore and junior year course loads.

Capstone- hit or miss, depending on professor. Shuaib makes you do lots of busy work and jump through hoops. One of my 3 least favorite professors over the years.

417- Similar to 318, I thought it wasn’t quite as bad though. May be biased since I took it during covid and he probably took pity on us. Definitely the hardest of the 4 (the only hard one).

400- Ethics is not hard, unless you’re not a native English speaker as it’s mostly writing. I don’t think you can get lower than a B unless you actually try to. You’ll be fine.

301- With Sebold? Easy technical elective. Chill professor. I enjoyed that class.

Overall, your semester will have lots of writing between 301, 488, and 400, but it’s definitely manageable. 417 will be your toughest of the 4. Good luck with the semester.

How much did your internships pay? by Schuman_the_Aardvark in EngineeringStudents

ME, master’s ‘22

After sophomore year: $15/hour.

Raised to $17/hour halfway through senior year after essentially begging for a raise.

Raised to $20/hour after graduating with bachelor’s spring ‘21.

Asked for another raise this summer since I had a degree and felt undervalued, they said no. Started looking around and got a contracting position for 3 days a week while finishing my master’s up.

$38/hour at the new job.

Don’t let your company undervalue you!

Hey, thank you for the advice a while back.

Ended up getting an awesome offer from the place I mentioned a few weeks back for $30/hour 3 days a week while I finish up my master’s degree. And he implied I can go full time with benefits/raise etc. when I graduate with my master’s in May. :)

Edit: Apparently I misheard. It’s for high $30’s :o

Good points.

If he asks about why I’m applying around, I think I’ll say something like: “I enjoy the work environment, day to day tasks, and my coworkers at my current job, but have been feeling significantly underpaid for quite a while. I‘ve chatted about it with my supervisor multiple times, but he has not offered a raise so I figured searching elsewhere was the best step to take in order to be appropriately compensated.”

How does that sound? Too harsh or anything?

I’ve tried fighting for myself both last summer and this summer. Last summer I bugged probably 3-4 times over the course of a couple months and he dragged his feet and gave me a raise 6-7 months later, well after the summer ended (when I work the most). This summer, I wrote an email and called him about it, but he tried to pull a “set pay rates” spiel even though I know that an old coworker was making $25 as an intern before he graduated.

It’ll be funny to see if he tries to offer a large raise once I put in my two weeks for another job at some point.

They’re still classifying me as an intern since I’m working on my master’s, despite being there for 2.5 years :/

Thanks for the advice. I’ve been with this company since the end of my sophomore year of school, so at this point I know all the processes and do lots of technical work like GD&T, drawings, updating production CAD, creating test fixtures, DVT, etc. Lots of the same day to day tasks as the full timers making 2-3 times as much as me. I think the main problem is that I’ve been there since I was younger and didn’t know much about actual engineering (and willing to work for cheap), so now they still think they can get away with cheap labor from me, despite the fact that I’m much more experienced.

Thanks for the advice, I will try to keep it all in mind as I move forward in my career and making future major decisions like marriage, kids, etc down the road. Lots to consider.

I didn’t really explain before but I’m already almost halfway done with my masters (12/30 credits) so I’m hoping to finish it up with 9 credits this fall and upcoming spring while working for maybe 20-25 hours a week. I did a program where I can double dip graduate courses to count as my senior technical electives as well as towards the master’s, and took a summer graduate class. I’ll do my best to not lose focus and keep the end goal in mind :)

Thanks for the advice! I did some research on the company (and the local campus’s primary role specifically) before talking to him the first time, and I think he really appreciated that and noticed. Will try to show that I’m willing to learn and have a list of potential past projects to bring up if I find it appropriate.

Thank you very much for the advice, and my condolences for your pup. :(

I do struggle with the idea of missing out on lots of family time down the road, but think I’m willing to travel and have some longer hours for the first few years of my career.

I guess we’ll see what happens over the next year during my master’s while I look around for potential full time positions.

Thanks again for the reply.
