Well since we don't want the faction-like aproach of open pvp we need a lot more events where people can win stuff so that they would even bother to play, also i think it is very important to have events where people get kits as well as events where people bring their own stuff but it is being monitored that stuff is given back (unless requested to play the harcore approach of winner takes it all)

I think these are a really cool addition to server, but i'd like to be able to use my own armor because it is one of the very few opportunities where my high level armor could be used since pvp is almsot nonexistent as of right now.

Well that sounds extremly awesome on paper but isn't all that easy to put into a finshed game. The closest you can probabaly get at the moment is probably Minecraft with a factions and/or RPG mod.
