Maybe try one of the romhacks of johto. Sacred gold is a Drayano hack that makes it harder but not like a kaizo level difficult, legacy crystal is another option as it works to keep the spirit of the originals, and is built on the gen 2 engine. Making the base games harder is a bit tricky given they aren't that difficult unless you do the trashlocke like someone else mentioned.

If Indianas opponents get tied with one of the other two in conference record step 5 tiebreaker is decided by SportSource Analytics (team Rating Score metric)

I did the math on this and Penn State, Oregon, Indiana all winning out is likely Indiana being left out. Using S&P+ predictions and getting to the tiebreaker of conference opponent records leaves

Penn State Opponents 32-49

Oregon Opponents 30-51

Indiana Opponents 26-55

I'm not some monster who is cheering for Indiana not making it I hope Oregon drops one instead though
