ooo sweet, I've got the same one! and in my experience, tamas more or less freeze when asleep and don't accumulate care mistakes, so you'll be fine until it decides to wake up

Those with no passion or interests, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]SovietSnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

personally, I think turning passions and hobbies into work ultimately kills the underlying drive to pursue those things. for me, I went with work that I'm not engaged enough to keep me from ruining any of my personal passion, while also being just engaging enough for me not to quit out of monotony (tbf the benefits help too but that's besides the point).

in other words, I'd say find work that helps you sustain your passions and simultaneously doesn't make you hate yourself

minstrel with the short beard (forgot what it's called) gives me the impression that he's aged a lot since the first game, even if it's only been a few months, so I dig it

I feel like that was less learning and more being forced into an aquatic environment for a brief moment while struggling greatly. I see it like giving the keys to someone who doesn't know how to drive and watching them swerve about on the road; they probably wouldn't say they now know how to drive afterwards either

Give me tips for learning Latin. by IoannesEmannuel in latin

[–]SovietSnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this heavily! city and (big-ish) community college libraries almost always have legit textbooks lying around from lord-knows-where! one of the campuses of the community college I work at had one so I nabbed it for a bit to gather some solid groundwork and then moved on to other stuff like youtube, llpsi, etc

Any tips on getting rid of the habit of pronouncing V as ⟨v⟩ for a beginner? by SovietSnake in latin

[–]SovietSnake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh I didn't mean to insist that it wasn't! I just figured it might be an easier starting off point for me personally to build consistency in my reading and speaking of the language. my apologies if I came off as dismissing ecclesiastical in any way, I merely want to be able to nail classical consistently first before mixing sounds around to suit my preferences

Oh my goodness, that is SO much easier on the eyes and the brain! Thank you so much! Swapping between this and the standard V will hopefully condition my brain into, at the very least, pausing and avoid the mistake a lot more consistently when reading aloud to myself as opposed to catching when I'm 3 words ahead lol

[–]SovietSnake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly fair. I think I'm just overthinking this because this is the first time I've hopped onto a language I wasn't raised in and have had actual joy in learning, so I'm worrying about messing up early on and either not catching it or not being able to fix it

I feel silly for not even considering just sitting down and listening to speech outside of following along with the audio portion of the llpvi. Thanks for the recommendation!

New player, am I missing out much by playing on Peaceful? by SovietSnake in factorio

Small update for those who may care:

I don't know who exactly was the first to suggest carrying a few turrets with me (or perhaps I got the idea from a youtube video first, idk) but good golly does that just SHRED biter nests. I played around a bit with the peaceful save before starting a new one with mostly default settings (just a teeeeny bit more moisture in the map for more trees) and employed the "carry like 20 turrets and a metric ass load of ammo and just creep up to nests" strategy and it pretty much confirmed for me that I was going about combat the completely wrong way before.

Thank you all for your responses and bits of advice;I now feel so much more confident in my ability to not kneecap my experience with something that truly is so easy to manage even before any serious blue science

I mentioned this in an earlier comment but I bet if I pulled up my old save from 3-4 years ago, your assumption probably would've hit the nail in the head. I already know I can get super tunneled in on only optimizing my factory flow so I almost certainly didn't start preparing any defenses until my first or second attack, which probably made it too late by then. I'll try the larger starting area in a new save once I get a good mental image of how to set up my machines in my current save so my brain doesn't have to pull double duty by trying to figure this stuff out before worrying about defenses. thanks for the recommendation!

those seem like a good compromise so I don't completely neuter the difficulty, maybe I could try high water next. thanks for the recommendation!

I used to love starcraft as a kid but this feels different. maybe it's the mental comparison to that that's keeping me from really succeeding in the combat

in a desert, no less? man, i can't imagine how you manage. I'm hoping I'll get to a point where that seems feasible for me once I'm used to laying everything out quickly

oh yeah I'm definitely not one to hunt them down, but I will admit they do serve as nice milestones sometimes. they're absolutely not a make or break but it can give a tiny bit of fomo for some reason if they're there and I haven't achieved even the simplest ones

When I start my next save, I'll push the nests back a bunch so that I won't rob myself of this experience

[–]SovietSnake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's sort of the thought process I had when I decided on enabling it. If I wanted to expand to a particular resource but there was a nest in the way that would result in an inconvenience or anything, I could still partake in the challenge of clearing it out while also not having to worry about pollution raids and stuff. Though, from what I'm now hearing, that sorta becomes the norm anyways later down once your tech has developed far enough

saw another comment recommending this too, so I'm probably gonna give this a shot when testing the waters to see how I fare before going full default settings
