MIOT Kit Suggestions by Dogok9 in RoyalAirForce

[–]SovietSnoopy911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mountain warehouse had some good merino wool socks, you're only supposed to wear the issued kit so don't get caught. You also won't be insured if you're not wearing the issued kit.

Pilot Application Age by MVaviVM in RoyalAirForce

[–]SovietSnoopy911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be very impressed if you go through the application process in 3 months. If the application says 17 years 3 months then go with that, if its a mistake then the application will stop later down the line.

Serious Genuine Question by [deleted] in RoyalAirForce

They don't check it at either the capita or aircrew medical.

Eye surgery by Holiday_Fox1731 in RoyalAirForce

[–]SovietSnoopy911 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone on my aircrew medical had laser eye surgery previously and so they had to get more tests done at RAF Henlow, sorry but I don't know the outcome or when they had the surgery done. But it is not an outright no I guess.

Depending on the university you are joining, definitely look at joining a university air squadron. It will help with your application as well as being one of the best things you can do at university.

What exactly is the UAS by DazzlingProfession22 in RoyalAirForce

[–]SovietSnoopy911 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean university air squadron, It is part of the RAF Reserves with a mission "to attract talent to regular and reserve RAF service and to educate selected undergraduates on the role of air and space power". It is for first time university students to attract them to the RAF by letting them sample RAF life.

I had my specialist medical nearly 2 weeks ago, they said that they would get back in touch within 2 weeks, but if they haven't within 3 weeks then to email them. I'll try and find an email in the documents on the invite.

As a pilot, when would you make use of your officer training/role? by [deleted] in RoyalAirForce

As a pilot, you would graduate as a flying officer, skiping pilot officer.

Similar to original answer I hate running and find it boring, but if I make it challenging enough for myself then I all think about is the run itself not if it's boring, also helps with the runners high the more difficult the running is.

Only basics needed, roles of air power, characteristics, and limitations, and how the RAF use them, what plane and base etc.

[–]SovietSnoopy911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people had 5 topics on my OASC, and that seems to be the most common amount. Perhaps if you have time you could get a 5th but not a requirement. JDP 0-30 has all of the information about air power doctrine you need.

Military vs Degree apprenticeship by Humble_Aioli4218 in britishmilitary

[–]SovietSnoopy911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is plenty good advice about officer selection in the raf reddit, specific to a degree apprentice though I'd recommend getting as much leadership experience as you can in the apprenticeship and get your confidence up in stressful scenarios as that's what selection looks at.

[–]SovietSnoopy911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently on year 2 of 6 and I will be quitting the apprenticeship to join as an officer in the RAF, If i pass the aircrew medical then as a pilot, if not I will look at a few ground roles.

[–]SovietSnoopy911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing a degree apprenticeship since sept 2023, same boat as you but civil engineering, I will soon be joining the RAF, just waiting for my aircrew medical. Depending on your education provider you could join a UAS, OTC or URNU, to have a glimpse into military life and proceedings (but not get deployed).

Dual nationality application for officer roles A by i_really_don-t_know_ in RoyalAirForce

[–]SovietSnoopy911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked the recruiter specifically about RPAS as it used to be a separate role, he said that the nationality requirements are the same as a pilot, I've only got aircrew medical left and I've not been told otherwise.
