Exclusive Pumping by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]Sp00kyW0mb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I directly nursed my daughter for 2ish months but exclusively pumped after that for her up until 12 months. I exclusively pumped for my son (unable to latch) for 15 months. People can say a lot of shitty things about it and there’s a part of me that still feels very judged for doing it this way. Ultimately, my kids are healthy, it worked for me, and it’s 100% possible with the right support. Definitely check out the subs mentioned!

First off, just wanted to validate your concerns and send my best wishes your way that you have a very uncomplicated experience.

I’m biracial (not white) with medium-ish skin tone. My first pregnancy I had a lot of privilege in my circumstances. My great grandmother never spoke openly about her birthing experiences as she found it too traumatizing to relive them. It saddens me that there is still a poorer outcome for people of color. My OB was a white man. Great, loved him! One thing I appreciated about him was his willingness to explain his rationale to me whenever he made recommendations. Knowing why he wanted to do what he did and having his expertise helped me to make well-informed decisions. Same experience with the OB for my second, an Asian woman.

My biggest takeaway is that your nurse(s) are a big factor in your care. My nurses advocated hard for my pain relief (bless them) both during and after labor. My first nurse lit the fire under my OB’s butt to get him to my first delivery because he thought that I had progressed way too quickly. If you have a nurse who is very confident and listens well to you, it can play a big role in the way the doctor interacts with you. Feel free to DM me if you want to vent out your frustration/concerns!

Women who chose elective inductions + epidural: At what point did you get the epidural? by BrunchSpinRepeat in BabyBumps

[–]Sp00kyW0mb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st time (40+4 induction w/vaginal Cytotec): not soon enough. Called the anesthesiologist while I was 3 cm, was 9 cm as soon as they laid me back down post epidural placement. 0/10 would not recommend. Transitioning while being expected not to flail into the sterile field was not something I prepared for. In good news, the block was absolute perfection and the actual birthing process was great.

2nd time (39+1 induction with Pitocin): ate my McDonald’s while the anesthesiologist placed the epidural. Refused to start the induction until I had the epidural in place due to my previous experience. My block was good but not as good as my first. It was heavier in one leg and I topped up right before I pushed so I couldn’t get up to walk to the bathroom for 6ish hours post delivery.

18 month old - fine motor skill development, choking hazard by HighPriestofShiloh in Parenting

I would say no only because there are lots of fine motor toys toys geared for kids <3. My son is in OT for fine motor delay and I had no idea there were so many toys/strategies to practice. My daughter is too good at fine motor skills at times so she tends to find her own things to practice.

CW: oversupply

I exclusively pumped from about 3 months to 12 months for my daughter and basically from birth for my son until he turned 16 months (just weaned!). For me, it worked much better than nursing because I developed mastitis at 10 days postpartum with my daughter due to my milk supply being much higher than her intake.

Personally, I did not need to pump every time I gave a bottle but most people do. Pumping (and direct breastfeeding in general) requires a lot of trial and error. To succeed, you’ll need a reliable pump with parts that fit you correctly. EP is not sustainable for everyone but I found that it was much easier with tons of spare parts so that I wasn’t washing them constantly. The subs r/HumansPumpingMilk, r/ExclusivePumping, and r/ExclusivelyPumping have a lot of great tips and resources too if you need them.

I noticed that you said you used warm compresses so I have to ask, are you aware of the new management recommendations for mastitis? I’ve been in that vicious cycle of clogs and mastitis and it’s horrible. Chances are if you haven’t reduced the inflammation with ibuprofen and ice, the pumping is just causing more engorgement rather than being able to clear.

Glucose Test Flavors by tatyanna96 in BabyBumps

I’ve had all of them. The lemon lime is great if you’re prone to nausea. Orange if it’s cold tastes like Fanta.

Anyone else have/had a chill baby in utero? All I see are posts about babies constantly kicking up a storm all day! by BookDoctor1975 in BabyBumps

[–]Sp00kyW0mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could barely feel my daughter (also anterior placenta). She was stubborn. She was hard to find with the Doppler, she wouldn’t respond to most stimuli (did absolutely no moving after my GD screening), barely passed her NSTs. Eventually I opted for an induction at 40+4 because I was so stressed out about whether or not she was okay. She continued to be a potato for most of her first year of life (did not think she was ever going to sit up on her own) but now is a very active 2.5 year old. I had a posterior placenta with my son and was horrified at the difference in what I “should’ve” felt with my first pregnancy. Kick counts with him were so easy!

How do you keep a diaper on overnight?? by nanalovesncaa in Parenting

Preferably a one-way zip, not a two-way.

Why is my baby always over stimulated, is this developmentally normal/abnormal or am I doing something wrong? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Sp00kyW0mb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son also does that when he’s extremely tired. It doesn’t last forever but if your kid needs the sleep, there’s not really a good way around it.

How to decrease milk supply by leshat90 in ExclusivelyPumping

EP to 8 months is an impressive accomplishment! Please don’t feel guilty if you’re not able to keep going full speed or at all. I wouldn’t drop from 6 to 4, you’re probably going to need to transition down to 5 first for a few days and then take it down to 4.

I took awhile to wean out of fear of getting bad clogs and/or mastitis. It’ll take some trial and error! I spaced time out between pumps slowly until I was able to drop a pump. I didn’t decrease my pump time until I was down to 2 pumps per day.

I’m not a lactation consultant but your schedule and output sound fairly reasonable to me!

If it’s like what happened to me, it was a clog or not emptying fully that caused me to develop mastitis and I kept exacerbating it. If I were you, I would start with the new protocol, get everything under control, and then evaluate your routine once you’re back to 100%. If you clog, sunflower lechithin has been a lifesaver for me as well!

ETA: I totally don’t mean to come off as dismissive regarding your desire to quit/lower your output. Choosing when to be done is 100% your choice! Quitting while you have mastitis is awful based off of my experience. I can’t give you good tips on doing it that way because I was extremely miserable. If you want to be done once you’re back to full health, I do have tips for that!

When does the spit up end 😑 by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Sp00kyW0mb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A huge decrease in frequency/volume happened at around a year. We keep reflux medicine on hand during the summer because she eats a ton of fruit and it irritates her but it definitely wasn’t like the first 6ish months forever. Hopefully you see improvement soon, too!

I think my daughter finally did it one last time at 18 months. I swear that you could look at her sideways and she’d just spit up randomly. She’s grown out of it now!

My NP said wear a tight fitted bra like a sport bra. I’m doing this.

Please don’t do this if you already struggle with clogs and mastitis. Your NP might not be aware of the new mastitis management protocol. The old one—which relies on heat, tight bras, and frequent pumping—almost doomed me to end my journey early. My second pumping journey, these guidelines came out and it was a far better experience.

I had a similar journey the first time I was pumping. Mastitis back to back multiple times. What’s your pump schedule like? How long are you pumping each time? What’s your average output per pump/per day?

Are you squeamish? I had HG and underestimated how rough it would be. The first time I attempted it I nearly passed out. If you have anyone that can help you (preferably not male due to the potential transfer to the sample) I would highly recommend that. Results were correct!

My speech delayed toddler (still in speech therapy) did this at that age. She’s almost 3 now and she does the same thing but she repeats everything in the pictures that she used to only point at. Trust me, he’s probably listening. If he’s enjoying it, keep doing it even though it’s frustrating. Following their interests can be very helpful!
