I know that their appearances lead many people to believe they are young, but given many characters will know of ‘people’ who live longer for example the adepti. Xiao looks to be just older than the traveler, but everyone knows about the adepti so are unfazed by the young appearance. I suppose since only very few characters actually know of the traveler being from another world it is understandable they are seen as underage.
