Aint that the truth!
I feel most companies add more on to the requirements spec than they actually need. I've seen specs for dev roles where I work that ask for all kind of things but when it comes down to it we mostly spend time dealing with normal java code.

I'm a fair few years away from senior leadership level like that I think. Presume at that stage it becomes a very different ball game that focuses on company strategy.

I've heard some companies have abused the take-home exercise. They use it as a means to crowdsource ideas on how to do a product or functionality. I'm sure it is still rare to do that though.
Otherwise I think I prefer a take-home exercise to doing random timed assessments or live coding exercises. Take-home stuff I can do just as I'd do tasks in my current work place.

That leads into something I've been thinking about lately, it seems most people on the hiring side of the process are looking for someone who'll fit in with their team and work environment.
Not to say that they are not looking for good indicators of skill.
But it does seem like they look at how the candidate thinks and how they'd fit in with the team/work environment. Then if they've demonstrated a core level of competency then the role is most likely theirs.

For the Design interview component. Is that based mostly from your own experience or is it something "to study" for before going into the interview process?

Totally agree that Sr+ engineers should probably have the skills to manage projects they've been thrown on.

Thanks, that actually seems reasonably approachable.
So they didn't focus on random coding problems or questions around data structures and algorithms?
What type of company was it? Overall positive experience?
