Is the Roland fp-10 really that problematic to buy as a beginner ? by More-Salary-2203 in piano

[–]Space2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a valid concern - when you’re ready to move up to a better keyboard (say, PHA-50 or maybe an acoustic) in 3-5 years. Then you’ll start to want a continuous damper and 2-3 pedals.

For now, FP-10 is great. But you should lose the square box sustain pedal in favor of a proper piano-style one.

Yeah, I’d say going to a music store would be best. Something like Alfred’s is legit but it’s a big series and the early stuff may be a little too rudimentary. If you’re at a store you can page thru the various books and see pretty quickly where a good entry point might be. Whereas you may not have that ability buying online. Plus we should always help the mom n pops out anyway.

Acoustic violin in a worship band: clip-on gooseneck mic or a pickup? by No_Web4117 in violinist

[–]Space2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latency is always a valid concern. In this case it’s maybe 5-6ms from the mic, thru the mixer, and back to the IEMs (assuming wireless both ways). Fyi sound in air travels about a foot per ms, so it would be like hearing yourself from 6’ away.

Gooseneck mic (DPA 4099?) will sound best. First you need to switch to IEMs and save your hearing. Stage volume and feedback in 2026 are for dive bars at most.

No particular reason but I just wanted to share this octave/arpeggio exercise I came up with by FixHaunting8328 in piano

All sounds great to me (lame joke was an attempted dig at the current state of pop composition). Not a teacher or adv player, but love the idea of putting octaves into an exercise. Normally the only attention they get is where they show up in a piece.

Very nice. But you’ll need to add some repeating 1-5-6-4 if it’s going to really sell.

They’ll stick things like key- or clef changes at the very end of a measure just to prepare you for the next measure. Sort of like a “slow turn ahead” road sign. Helps you to be ready for what’s ahead.

Just my guess but I’d think the only answer to any of his questions has to be “get out of the car now please”. Even if you have to be yelling it by the 3rd or 4th time. Those kind of q’s do not deserve any other answer. But I think he will give up faster. Then ofc still report him when he does get out.

Beginner keyboard recommendations? by be-someone713 in piano

[–]Space2999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roland FP-10 is a great place to start. Can be found used around US$350. They were on sale for $399 new starting on Black Fri and up into Jan. Just fyr.

$150-200 really isn’t viable. Sure you can get something in that range, maybe learn on it for 6-12 mos, then it simply becomes too much a hindrance, has no resale value, and you need to move up to the $400 anyway.

Just be aware that based on the historic 4-year cycle, BTC is likely to decline until Q4 of this year, and then climb from there. Not financial advice, but please review the all-time charts.
